Willdan Performance Engineering is seeking a mid-level commissioning agent to join our team to support our projects ranging from California to the Central and Mountain regions. The successful candidate will work closely with our internal development and construction teams to ensure projects are installed and perform as designed for our clients while meeting our energy guarantees. Willdan provides services in the design and implementation of building energy savings projects, energy management, mechanical HVAC systems design and measurement & verification of energy and water savings. Our typical focus includes facilities in higher education, K-12 education, healthcare, county government, city government, commercial and industrial facility markets.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the commissioning process for MEP and DER projects with minimal supervision, from planning through acceptance and closeout.
  • Develop, maintain, and communicate commissioning plans, schedules, testing strategies, and project-specific commissioning requirements to owners, design teams, contractors, and internal project teams.
  • Review Owner's Project Requirements, Basis of Design, drawings, specifications, submittals, controls sequences, and shop drawings for commissioning-related issues, constructability, operability, maintainability, and alignment with project requirements.
  • Develop and execute pre-functional checklists, functional testing procedures, and seasonal functional testing.
  • Analyze BAS trends, test data, equipment performance, and field observations to identify deficiencies, root causes, and opportunities for improved system performance.
  • Maintain, communicate, and drive resolution of commissioning issues logs.
  • Collaborate with engineering, construction, subcontractor, controls, TAB, and operations teams to resolve technical issues and verify that installed systems meet design intent and owner requirements.
  • Prepare clear, technically accurate reports, meeting notes, commissioning progress updates, and final commissioning documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Conduct Existing Building Commissioning investigations when needed to improve operation of existing HVAC installations.
  • Assist with post-installation performance tracking, utility program requirements, and Measurement and Verification obligations.

Job Requirements / Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, construction management, building science, energy management, or a related technical field plus 5 years of relevant experience; or
  • Associate degree, technical degree, trade school, military technical training, or equivalent technical training plus 10 years of relevant experience troubleshooting, testing, commissioning, operating, or optimizing building MEP, controls, DER, TAB, or related systems.
  • Minimum of 5 years delivering the commissioning process for commercial, institutional, industrial, utility, or similar MEP/building systems projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead commissioning activities with limited supervision, including planning, document review, field testing, issue resolution, client communication, and reporting.
  • Working knowledge of automation and controls systems, HVAC systems, DER, plumbing, fire alarm/life safety systems, lighting and lighting controls, and test & balance procedures.
  • Experience holding teams accountable to process.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical findings to owners, contractors, engineers, and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience working on multiple activities/projects at one time and possess excellent organizational skills.
  • Commissioning certification, or ability to obtain within one year.
  • Knowledge of M&V practices is desirable.
  • Travel requirements will be variable based on the changing project mix and candidate's location, but could reach 40%-60% on average.
  • This role will support our existing and expanding projects from California to the Central US Regions
