The Promotional Priority Period for current Teamster applicants begins Friday, April 24 and ends Friday, May 1, 2026.

This position performs general custodial, grounds keeping, and maintenance tasks from detailed instructions. Typical tasks are listed below. These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and does not limit the assignments of related tasks. The individual in this position reports to the Building & Grounds Supervisor

Location and Work environment

  • In person work at Student Unions & Activities buildings CMU, West Bank and St Paul Student Center

Work Schedule (Department is looking to fill two with the following work schedules.)

  • First Shift: 5:30 AM - 2:00 PM, Monday through Friday OR
  • Second Shift: 3:00 - 11:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

Primary Responsibilities

Custodial, Grounds Keeping, Maintenance - 100%

  • Perform custodial work at Student Unions & Activities buildings CMU, West Bank and St Paul Student Center. Clean and stock auditoriums, ballrooms, large multi-function rooms, conference rooms, retail spaces, common areas, cafeterias, offices, corridors, stairways, loading docks, custodial closets,behind-the-scenes areas, and toilet rooms.
  • Perform grounds-keeping work. Sweep and shovel snow and debris from steps and sidewalks. Remove snow and leaves with shovels, brooms, or gas powered equipment.
  • Scrub floors with heavy-duty industrial scrubbing machines using strong industrial cleaning chemicals. Dry floors with heavy-duty industrial wet and dry pick up vacuums. Run laundering appliances. Mop floors with heavy wet mops. Apply floor seal with applicator. Maintain polished terrazzo floors. Sweep floors with floor brush or treated dust mop. Strip and wax floors, shampoo and extract carpets.
  • Clean toilet room hard surfaces, floors, walls, windows, mirrors, and fixtures. Polish chrome finishes.
  • Collect waste paper and recyclables. Replenish supplies.
  • Change incandescent and fluorescent lights that can be reached by a 12-foot stepladder. Clean lights and lighting fixtures, wash windows and perform other custodial tasks working with 23-foot scaffolding, 12-foot ladder or under 30-foot aerial (Genie) lift.
  • Observe deficiencies in building hardware, doors, windows, and other facilities, and turn in deficiency list at shifts end. Make verbal or written reports on unusual conditions.
  • Set up equipment and furniture required for building functions. Load and unload trucks. Dismantle, pack, and reassemble supplies and other materials. Move furniture, office equipment, tables, benches, chairs, refuse, garbage, supplies and various kinds of heavy equipment.
  • Work on custodial projects or other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the assignment
  • Ability to interact in a public setting in a respectful and professional manner
  • Must be able to read, write and communicated in English

Preferred Qualifications

  • Able to prioritize workload demands to reflect urgency of tasks and customer needs.
  • Able to organize multiple projects with conflicting deadlines.
  • Carpet extraction experience preferred.
  • One year of continuous work experience preferred.
  • Able to bend, stoop, climb stairs, shovel, mop and vacuum.
  • Able to be on feet for up to eight (8) hours a day.
  • Able to work at heights, on a ladder or in a lift to wash windows, change light bulbs, etc., as needed.
  • Able to work with cleaning chemicals on a daily basis.
  • Able to work with cleaning equipment, both manual and automatic, as needed.
About the Department

Student Unions & Activities (SUA) is a department within the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Minnesota. SUA operates three facilities: Coffman Memorial Union on the East Bank campus, services within the West Bank Skyway, and the St. Paul Student Center. The department has a total of 65 fulltime staff, representing all employee groups except faculty, and approximately 200 student employees.

SUA's mission is to provide a variety of programs and services to the University community that enhance the social, educational, and cultural environment of the University of Minnesota. Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $22.39 - $26.53 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 12 month Appointment
