What to Expect
The Material Flow & Automation team designs, deploys and supports robotic systems for conveyance storage and repack of car bodies, battery packs, drive units and general assembly commodities for Vehicle, Energy and Optimus. In this role you will lead end to end technical projects from concept through design, simulation, programming, commissioning, validation, testing and handover to operations. Senior engineers provide leadership on project timelines, budgets, vendor coordination, team guidance, risk management and documentation. Senior engineers manage several projects at the same time with variation and uncertainty. The position includes coordination with suppliers on equipment design reviews and with cross functional groups on integration of robotic cells into factory layouts. The systems support material movement at volume for current vehicle programs and for Optimus robot production lines. This work enables production targets and supports Tesla mission to build a world of abundance through automated material flow. The role requires travel to supplier sites and factory locations during project phases along with participation in lessons learned activities and standardization of robotic practices across multiple Tesla sites.
What You'll Do
- Design robotic cells for material flow conveyance storage and repack systems
- Create simulations and offline programs using Fanuc Roboguide
- Program, commission and troubleshoot Fanuc robots with DCS, iRVision and custom code
- Design end of arm tools and robot safety systems
- Lead projects from concept through supplier management, design, validation and handover
- Provide technical leadership and troubleshooting support during deployment
- Coordinate with vendors, cross functional teams and operations on timelines, budgets and documentation
What You'll Bring
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering Electrical Engineering Mechatronics or equivalent experience
- 5 years of experience with industrial robot programming, commissioning, simulation, project leadership, machine design, moving mechanisms component, part design, machined part processes and ability to manage several projects with variation and uncertainty
- Experience with Fanuc robots offline programming, vision systems, end of arm tool design, factory implementation and controls integration
- CAD proficiency (Solidworks preferred)
- Preferred knowledge of material handling in automotive manufacturing and machine vision
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods work in manufacturing environments with noise moving equipment and temperature variation and occasionally lift up to 25 kg.
