Mainframe Software Engineer
Employment Type: ContracttoHire Work Model: Hybrid Location: Tampa, FL; Jersey City, NJ; Dallas, TX (hybrid availability required) Interview Process: Two rounds
Position Overview
We are seeking a Mainframe Software Engineer to design, develop, enhance, and support enterprise mainframe applications. This role involves working closely with architects, business analysts, and infrastructure teams to deliver reliable, highperformance solutions that support critical business operations. The ideal candidate brings strong COBOL, CICS, DB2, JCL, and MQ expertise, experience supporting production environments, and the ability to collaborate effectively within Agile delivery teams.
Key Responsibilities
Application Development & Design
- Serve as a technical subject matter expert for one or more enterprise applications
- Design, develop, and maintain COBOL programs for both batch and online processing within CICS regions
- Contribute to the design and implementation of program components and system enhancements
- Research and recommend technical solutions aligned with enterprise standards
Database, Messaging & Integration
- Design, optimize, and maintain DB2 SQL queries and stored procedures in accordance with performance and standards guidelines
- Implement and support IBM MQ messaging solutions for secure and reliable intersystem communication
- Support integrations and data flows between mainframe systems and external platforms
Batch Processing & Scheduling
- Develop and maintain JCL scripts for batch processing and job scheduling
- Troubleshoot batch abends and optimize batch performance
- Work with enterprise job scheduling tools to ensure timely and reliable execution
Performance, Testing & Production Support
- Tune application performance to improve efficiency and reliability
- Create and maintain unit test cases to validate functional and nonfunctional requirements
- Support testing, troubleshooting, and production incident resolution, including root cause analysis
- Participate in release management processes, including change package creation and production migration
Collaboration & Delivery
- Work closely with Business Analysts to ensure technical designs meet functional requirements
- Collaborate with infrastructure teams to identify and deploy optimal hosting environments
- Participate in Agile ceremonies, provide effort estimates, and deliver incremental value
- Contribute to continuous integration, continuous delivery, and improved delivery practices
Governance, Risk & Professional Development
- Align daytoday work with risk and control processes; raise concerns as appropriate
- Maintain current knowledge of mainframe technologies and industry trends
- Demonstrate curiosity and interest in using automation or AIassisted tools to improve efficiency
- Mentor peers and contribute to a collaborative, teamoriented environment
Required Qualifications
Experience & Education
- 6+ years of professional experience in mainframe software development
- Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent professional experience
Technical Skills
- COBOL (batch and online)
- CICS
- DB2 (SQL, performance tuning)
- JCL
- IBM MQ / MQSeries
- Enterprise job schedulers
- Agile and SDLC processes
Preferred Skills
- Experience supporting largescale, missioncritical systems
