What to Expect
Tesla Energy is accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy through a rapidly growing fleet of residential solar, battery, and charging systems, spanning hundreds of thousands of homes across the globe. Our distributed network generates terabytes of real-time telemetry data every day, creating an unparalleled opportunity to understand how hardware performs under real-world conditions. We are seeking a product engineer to own the end-to-end product lifecycle for our residential energy systems. You will be the technical bridge between fleet data, field failures, and engineering teams, diagnosing complex failure modes, leading root cause investigations, and driving corrective actions that improve performance for hundreds of thousands of customers. This is a high-impact, hands-on role with direct visibility to senior leadership. You'll work across the full stack: from interpreting telemetry and debugging hardware in the field with multimeters and oscilloscopes, to writing Python scripts that analyze fleet-wide failure patterns, to leveraging AI tools to accelerate diagnostics and documentation. You'll own the "state of the fleet" from a product performance perspective and help shape the future of Tesla's energy hardware.
What You'll Do
- Lead Field & Fleet Diagnostics: Investigate complex product issues using electrical debugging tools (multimeters, oscilloscopes, etc.). Conduct on-site or remote troubleshooting to isolate root causes
- Own Product Quality from Data to Action: Define data signatures that uniquely identify issues, develop and run SQL/Python queries on fleet logs, and integrate findings into automated alerting and diagnosis systems
- Drive End-to-End Corrective Actions: Translate root cause findings into firmware changes, manufacturing process improvements, design modifications, or service campaigns. Track implementation timelines and confirm efficacy
- Produce Executive-Level Technical Reports: Author regular reports summarizing trends, countermeasure impact, fleet health and insights, communicating complex technical insights clearly to leadership
- Leverage AI & LLM Tooling: Use AI-powered tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate code generation, test automation, documentation, and diagnostic reasoning
- Support Escalations: Provide Tier 3 engineering support for safety-critical issues, communicating findings and actions clearly and decisively
What You'll Bring
- Degree in an engineering discipline or computer science (electrical engineering strongly preferred) or equivalent experience
- 3-5 years of role-relevant practical work experience
- Proven hands-on experience using multimeters, oscilloscopes, and other electrical test equipment to troubleshoot and debug hardware
- Strong analytics skills, proficient in SQL and Python for analyzing large-scale datasets
- Experience with AI/LLM tooling in engineering workflows, with demonstrated use of tools like Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar to accelerate coding, debugging, documentation, and problem-solving
- Experience leading or participating in 8D or similar failure analysis processes, from identification through countermeasure implementation and monitoring
- An excellent attention to detail and an ability to produce clear and concise written instructions
- Work travel is expected to be <5% in this job. This could include traveling to lab sites, customer sites, our manufacturing facilities, etc.
