a Public Safety Telecommunicator, you will play a pivotal role in responding to emergencies, coordinating safety efforts, and ensuring a rapid, efficient response to every situation. What You'll Do:
- Be the Hero Behind the Scenes: Answer and assess emergency and non-emergency calls, quickly providing essential information to the right responders, ensuring swift action when it matters most.
- Coordinate and Lead Safety Efforts: Dispatch police, fire, and rescue teams to various University locations, ensuring the right resources arrive promptly to protect and assist our community.
- Harness Cutting-Edge Technology: Operate and maintain the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, ensuring seamless and accurate communication across the entire campus.
- Monitor Campus-Wide Systems: Stay alert and ready to respond to campus fire and intrusion alarms, ensuring safety protocols are executed swiftly when necessary.
- Access Vital, Real-Time Information: Use the Division of Criminal Information terminal to gather and share data that helps enhance campus security and emergency response.
- Ensure Operational Excellence: Manage equipment, maintain important records, and ensure everything is ready for action at a moment's notice.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collect Accurate Call Information: Gather detailed and pertinent information from calls and enter it into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, ensuring a 95% accuracy rate.
- Provide Vital Safety Information: Use telephone resources in the Emergency Communication Center (ECC) to give callers crucial public safety information.
- Prioritize & Dispatch Calls: Effectively prioritize multiple calls, processing and dispatching them in a timely manner based on urgency.
- Handle TDD/TTY Calls: Accept TDD/TTY calls and test the equipment weekly to ensure reliable communication when needed.
- Radio Protocol & Signal Codes: Use correct radio channel assignments and signal codes while maintaining professional radio communication with a combination of ten-codes and plain language.
- Process Non-Emergency Requests: Address non-emergency university service requests with the same level of professionalism and efficiency.
- Time Checks & Monitoring: Perform time checks for field units and monitor SIMS fire and intrusion alarms, making timely notifications of specific alarm issues.
DCI Compliance: Ensure security and confidentiality of records in compliance with DCI regulations and maintain accurate records of DCI transactions.- Handle Calls with Sensitivity: Provide compassionate responses to distressed callers, using the appropriate language and tone to reassure them and offer assistance until help arrives.
- Coordinate Activities & Communicate Effectively: Interact with colleagues, supervisors, law enforcement, emergency response teams, university officials, and the public to relay information and coordinate activities.
- Analyze & Prioritize Calls: Qualify each call to determine if it's a routine or emergency situation, initiating the necessary action based on procedures and the information received.
- Dispatch & Notify Units: Dispatch the appropriate emergency units and provide them with critical, accurate call information.
- Monitor & Troubleshoot Systems: Regularly monitor crime tip hotlines, weather alerts (Skyguard), fire/intrusion alarms, panic buttons, CCTV, GPS systems, and DCI, and troubleshoot any issues as they arise.
