Purpose of Position
The Director of Advising for the College of Education at Northern Kentucky University ( NKU) plays a vital role in providing leadership and strategic direction for academic advising services within the college. This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of student advising to ensure student success, retention, and timely graduation.
Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise a team of academic advisors within the College of Education.
  • Provide professional development opportunities and guidance to advisors.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative advising environment focused on student success.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for advising services aligned with the college's goals and objectives.
  • Continuously assess advising practices and recommend improvements based on data and feedback.
  • Serve as a resource and advisor for student on academic requirements, policies, and procedures.
  • Conduct advising sessions with students, particularly those with complex academic needs.
  • Assist students in academic planning, course selection, and career exploration.
  • Collaborate with faculty, department chairs, and academic leadership to enhance advising effectiveness.
  • Facilitate communication and partnerships between advising, faculty, and other student support services.
  • Represent the College of Education in university-wide advising initiatives and committees.
  • Collect and analyze data related to advising practices, student outcomes, and retention rates.
  • Prepare reports and presentations on advising effectiveness and student success metrics.
  • Develop and implement programs to support student retention and progression.
  • Coordinate outreach activities and workshops to promote advising services and student success initiatives.
  • Represent the College of Education at recruitment and orientation events.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, or related field.
  • Experience in academic advising, student services, or related areas within higher education.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to supervise and develop advising staff.
  • Strong understanding of academic programs, degree requirements, and student support services.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders including faculty, staff, students, and administrators.
  • Knowledge of advising technologies and student information systems.
  • Commitment to student-centered advising practices and fostering a supportive learning environment.
  • Experience in data analysis and using metrics to make decisions.
