Position Summary
This position will function as the SCADA Field Engineer providing engineering and subject matter expert technical support of new and existing technology involving the remote SCADA field devices and integration to advanced SCADA applications. This position is also to assist in the maintenance and support of the Remote SCADA field device compliance and asset management software(s) and will review, evaluate, and assist the Remote SCADA team to implement software and firmware updates.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Innovates and facilitates deployment and testing of new and existing technology involving the remote SCADA field devices and working with other SCADA teams to integrate with advanced SCADA applications like Downtown Network VaultGard, Volt/VAR Optimization (VVO), Fault Location and Isolation and Service Restoration (FLISR), MicroGrid, and Distributive Energy Resources (DER) e.g. batter storage sites, generators, and solar sites
- Stays current with SCADA vendor equipment releases, developing technologies and industry trends especially as related to cybersecurity and safety to provide solutions and process improvements for business benefits and efficiencies
- Assists in maintaining the compliance and asset software application(s) for all Remote SCADA field equipment assets used on the Renewable Energy, Gas, Fossil Generation and Electric Transmission, Substation &Distribution systems
- Works with EITS, Security, and Enterprise Networks to ensure field devices are secure from physical and cyber-attacks
- Ensures SCADA database accuracy by performing SCADA point checkouts with SCADA programmers and field personnel to ensure reliable and accurate representation of SCADA models in real-time operations
- Identify remote SCADA field device issues or enhancement opportunities and coordinate with equipment vendor to develop a firmware update and test plan
- Lead or facilitate advanced debugging of SCADA protocols to ensure accurate and optimal telemetry behavior across all field assets
- Provide recommendations to field personnel, other SCADA engineers and operations to ensure maximum accuracy, situational awareness, and cyber security is achieved through-out the field SCADA architecture
- Ensure regulatory compliance by creating, maintaining, and verifying SCADA cyber security controls as well as related documentation
- Minimal financial responsibility
- Assisting with the development and implementation of internal work processes, standard operating procedures, and training material
- Assist with gathering information for both internal and external customers
- Attends seminars, continuing education opportunities for professional development
- Performs other project and process improvement initiatives as assigned
- Ensures operational processes and procedures are compliant and consistent with established department policies
- Assign and direct technical work of others including vendors and consultants
- Use technical expertise and creativity to develop and implement innovative solutions to complex problems that increase value delivered to CPS Energy operations and customers
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Basic knowledge of fundamental engineering concepts, practices and procedures

Ability to obtain Professional Engineer License in State of Texas
Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling
Preferred Qualifications
- Engineer In Training (EIT) designation from Texas Board of Professional Engineers or Texas Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Experience with electric distribution or transmission systems
- Technical writing experience or college course work in technical writing
- Experience with Computer Aided-Drafting systems and Bentley Microstation software
- Familiarity with ESRI GIS software and Arc FM Designer software
- Experience with SAP and Work Manager software
- Experience with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), Eaton VaultGard, or similar vendor RemoteTerminal Unit (RTU) equipment including configuration and database maintenance
- Knowledge of SCADA and Common communication Protocols such as DNP3, IEC 61850 and TCP/IP
- Experience with utility Transmission, Distribution or Gas operations and real-time system architectures
- Familiarity with NERC CIP, NIST cyber security controls and other BES reliability standards
- Knowledge and fluent use of Windows/Linux Operating systems and scripting languages (shell, python)
- Experience with and ability to configure and read output of ASE test set or Wireshark protocol analyzer for protocol level debugging
- Experience troubleshooting telemetry errors and performance problems as they relate to SCADA systems

Minimum Education
Bachelors of Science degree in an engineering field from an ABET accredited four-year college or university
Working Environment
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Employee may potentially be exposed to hazardous chemicals, wet or humid conditions, outdoor weather, noisy and dusty environment.
Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events. After hours work may be required.
Physical Demands
