The Commissioning Engineer team is responsible for performing final testing, startup, and commissioning of low and medium voltage electrical distribution equipment, including breakers, transformers, switches, switchgear, relays, and motor control centers, as well as other electrical apparatus both in the field and in a manufacturing environment. An understanding of sophisticated electrical distribution systems of complex electrical test equipment is required. You will contribute to a safe working environment for co-workers and customers and help ensure the overall success of projects. Local, regional, and national travel may be required.


Responsibilities

  • Assists more experienced Commissioning Specialists and Managers in coordinating, executing, and reviewing MEP commissioning deliverables, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, life safety, and control systems.
  • Prepares and reviews basic MEP sketches, commissioning plans, test procedures, and data sheets under supervision.
    Performs simple, routine calculations related to MEP systems (e.g., electrical load checks, airflow or hydronic verification, basic system capacity or performance checks).
  • Assists in the review of supplier and vendor documentation to verify compliance with project specifications, design intent, and commissioning requirements.
  • Utilizes applicable engineering and commissioning standards, guides, and internal department resources to support assigned tasks across MEP disciplines.
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of commissioning, inspection, and testing of MEP components and systems, including startup support and functional performance testing activities.
  • Possesses foundational knowledge of engineering principles applicable to MEP systems, including electrical, mechanical, and controls fundamentals.
  • Maintains basic familiarity with MEP infrastructure systems, which may include:
  • Electrical distribution systems (switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, UPS, power monitoring, protective relays)
    Mechanical systems (HVAC equipment, pumps, hydronic systems)
    Plumbing and fire protection systems
    Building automation, controls, and system interfaces
  • Demonstrates proficiency in technical writing, including commissioning documentation, test forms, and reports.
    Applies working knowledge of advanced mathematics as required to support engineering and commissioning tasks.
  • Maintains a basic awareness of industry codes, standards, and commissioning best practices relevant to MEP systems.
  • Exhibits strong written and verbal communication skills when working with project teams, contractors, and vendors.
  • Willing and able to travel periodically to customer and project sites to support commissioning activities.

Qualifications

  • This position requires a high school diploma or GED with a minimum of 8+ years of field experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 2+ years of experience in related field
  • Applicants selected must be willing to travel to customer sites.
  • Travel up to 100% may be required.

Abilities:

  • The position requires the ability to lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to [50 pounds] on a regular basis. Candidates must demonstrate physical strength and stamina to perform various tasks, including but not limited to, loading, and unloading, operating equipment, and assisting in the transportation of various materials. Proper lifting techniques and safety protocols must be followed to ensure personal and team safety.
  • Relocates a 12 foot stepladder without assistance.
  • Works at various heights up to 60 feet and can climb and maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks and all types of ladders.
  • Walks, climbs, lifts, squats, crawls, kneels, pushes, pulls and reaches overhead on a routine and repetitive basis.
  • Possess good vision (may be corrected vision), the ability to see in color, and the ability to hear and communicate in English.
  • May use a standard ladder without exceeding the weight limit while carrying tools.
  • Tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
  • Apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
