National Grid is hiring a Senior Supervisor (Internal and External), Capital Delivery Supervision for Whitinsville, Massachusetts.

Job Purpose

The Senior Supervisor, Hoisting and Rigging at the Construction Depot will supervise employees that provide hoisting & rigging services for capital projects and electric operations. Your role is to provide leadership and technical direction to the assigned union employees at the Construction Depot within the Internal Substation Construction Department in the execution of all rigging, crane, and lift operations as well as coordinating the delivery and logistics of materials for all electric construction projects. You will manage appropriate staffing levels, safety, training, and qualifications for rigging and lift operations and material management. This position supports the planning and execution of rigging and lifting tasks to ensure work is performed safely and efficiently. This position routinely interacts with operations managers, customers, other supervisors, planners, and schedulers to coordinate work activities and meet the organizational goals.

Key Accountabilities
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of assigned department personnel engaged in hoisting, rigging, and delivering material and equipment with expert knowledge of crane operations, load charts, critical lifts, and crane limitations. Specify locations for movement and erection of hoists, cranes, and forklifts using knowledge of various methods of sliding, lifting, and rigging equipment.
  • Coordinate the material logistics for all capital electric construction projects delivering to various job sites.
  • Oversee Field Accounting activities such as employee time entry, equipment rentals, and timely processing and payment of invoices.
  • Assure that assigned personnel are productively assigned to the highest priority work, trained, and evaluated within National Grid guidelines and procedures and state and federal requirements. Conduct employee performance assessments and assist with development plans.
  • Remain current with latest lifting technology systems and training.
  • Identify and obtain oversize permits & escorts for oversized material/equipment transportation.
  • Establish and implement a clean, uncluttered, and safe worksite.
  • Assign daily specific work activities on the approved schedule and set expectations for working leader oversight/coordination of daily work.
  • Ensure qualifications for assigned employees are current and meet the company's training and progression timelines per state and federal requirements.
  • Participate in job walk down to plan and identify job scope, identifying hazards, implement hazards controls, means and methods for performing work.
  • Subject matter expert and approver for the procurement of Crane, Hoist, Slings, Spreader Bars and all the hook equipment.
  • Approve lift plans, inspect the equipment prior to lift, and complete pre-task safety briefs.
  • Perform duties as a member of the Fleet and other safety related committees.
  • Provide regular feedback to assigned employees, continually develop skills, coach and mentor assigned employees to ensure work is executed as expected, conduct performance appraisals, and administer discipline.
  • Ensure employee regular and overtime hours are managed in accordance with union contract requirements. Establish and communicate overtime schedules.
  • Develop and improve standard operating procedures to promote consistency in lifting / rigging, material management.
  • Establish and maintain performance metrics to measure the effectiveness of the assigned group.
  • Promote a professional work environment with established objectives, policies, procedures and plans.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of work planning, risk assessment, controls, union contract requirements, OSHA requirements.
  • Assure that required vehicles, equipment, materials and tools used by personnel are available and maintained at proper levels.
  • Assure that high standards of safety, security and environmental compliance are developed, met and maintained at the work sites.
  • Assure that required paperwork is accurate and submitted on time (e.g. drivers logs, vehicle inspection reports, crane inspection reports, job briefings, tailboard discussion check sheets, time sheets, etc.).
  • Effectively coordinate a high level of worker productivity under a variety of site work conditions.
  • Understand and interpret the union labor agreement to assure uninterrupted and safe workflow.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of department emergency response procedures to help arrange and provide resource support as needed. Remain available to be contacted, by phone in the event of a system emergency.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of 3 years demonstrated experience leading teams within a collective bargaining environment.
  • A minimum 5 years relevant experience in hoisting & rigging operations and logistics management.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, OSHA, NEC, local, safety, and environmental rules and regulations.
  • Must understand electrical construction principles, equipment, work methods, and the hazards associated with this work and can mitigate those hazards.
  • Ability to develop a working knowledge of National Grid's maintenance practices, safe work practices, tagging rules and labor contracts.
  • Ability to work as a team and independently.
  • Must be self-motivated and have strong time management and record keeping skills.
  • Ability to develop, administer, and enforce a strong safety culture.
  • Maintain an unrestricted driver's license.
  • Able to travel throughout the service territory and willing to work extended hours when required and for system emergencies.
  • Demonstrated rigging and setting of high-value equipment and critical lifts.
  • Demonstrated ability and knowledge to develop critical lifting plans compliant with federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Requires knowledge and functional responsibility for proper operations of forklifts and mobile cranes.
  • Requires knowledge of telehandler operations.
  • Experience in the coordination of construction and maintenance rigging projects.
  • Broad knowledge of relevant codes and safety regulations pertaining to rigging and crane operation.
  • Experience with lift planning, calculations and software, and DOT oversize permits & escort requirements.
  • Highly skilled communicator both verbally and in writing. Ability to employ computer applications such as SAP, material management software, MS Office, and Rigging / Lifting software.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with a diverse team
