The College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Virginia is seeking to fill the role of Academic Advising Dean as they continue their major investment into undergraduate advising. Academic Advising Deans are senior level academic advisors who provide specialized services for undergraduate students in the College. While students have a primary pre-major advisor, Academic Advising Deans handle complex matters such as working with students on academic warning or suspension, coordinating university resources for students, processing appeals to academic decisions, and working with students in crisis. Each semester Advising Deans oversee the academic audit to identify students in potential academic jeopardy and help them develop a plan for working toward graduation.
Academic Advising Deans will model a culture of student-centered approaches to advising. Most academic Advising Deans work with a general population of students, but they may be assigned to a specialized portfolio of students, such as athletes, veterans, transfers or Echols scholars. Academic Advising Deans will be expected to participate in professional development activities and will also mentor early-career advisors and act as a resource to faculty and/or departments seeking guidance on various issues. Advising Deans in the College of Arts & Sciences have a demonstrated commitment to the Liberal Arts and Sciences, an ability to understand the College curriculum and an ability to help students navigate academic policies. Critically, advising deans demonstrate an empathetic and student-centered approach to support students' intellectual and emotional development. The successful candidate will be expected to:
Minimum Requirements Qualified candidates must have a terminal degree and five years of relevant experience. About the Position The salary for this position is $81,000. This position will not consider candidates who require immigration sponsorship now or in the future. This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs. This position is located on the UVA Grounds in Charlottesville, VA.
