Requisition Number: 2026-1350-05

Do you want to play a critical role in ensuring the structural integrity of steel components and welded systems that communities rely on every day? S&ME is seeking an individual passionate about ensuring the structural integrity of steel to join our NDT/NDE team in Charlotte, North Carolina, as a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).

Your Day-to-Day:

As a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) with a focus on NDT/NDE, you will guide metals technicians through advanced testing assignments while supervising field staff, shaping technical decisions that impact project timelines, and independently carrying out laboratory and metals testing work. This role includes significant fieldwork, which may involve safely climbing steel structures, such as buildings, communication towers, and water tanks, to elevations exceeding 200 feet while using fall protection equipment and personal arrest systems.

  • Field Operations: You conduct inspections and apply non-destructive testing methods to ensure strict quality standards are met. A substantial part of your field time will be spent performing NDT procedures, including ultrasonic testing (UT) of welds and/or magnetic particle testing (MT) of welds.
  • Assignment Management: You organize and manage testing tasks across multiple projects, supporting the successful completion of each effort.
  • Equipment Maintenance: You maintain and calibrate testing equipment, which may include overseeing field and laboratory inventories, keeping formal calibration documentation, and taking part in quality assurance audits.
  • Comprehensive Reporting: You prepare thorough reports to clearly present your inspection results.

The role may involve workweeks exceeding 50 hours during high-demand periods, along with occasional evening, overnight, and weekend shifts as needed.

What We Are Looking For:

We are looking for someone with a strong work ethic and the ability to manage demanding workloads. You should bring a proactive, safetyminded approach, communicate clearly with team members and clients, and stay organized while handling multiple priorities. Experience in Safety, DDC, NDT, or Radiation Training is highly valued and will help you succeed in this role.

What You Bring:

  • Education: High School Diploma/GED
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of NDT/NDE metals testing experience OR an associate degree in a closely related field
  • Certifications:

    • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
    • Achievement of ASNT Level II per ASTN-SNT-1A in at least one method
    • Additional Certs a plus:

      • ICC in Building Inspections and/or Structural Steel Inspection
      • Level II UT and/or PT, MT

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment, such as:

  • Ability to climb heights over 200 feet
  • Working the majority of the time outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Working outside of normal business hours and traveling (typically out-of-town and/or overnight) as project needs arise
