Salary Range: $73,200 - $115,700 (SE I)


What your job will be like:

As a staff engineer I, you will work closely with more senior staff on superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) problems or projects of minimal complexity. 60% of your time will be focused on the ARPA-E NEWTON project, contributing to milestones in developing advanced SRF cavities for transmutation of used nuclear fuel. The other 40% of your time will be devoted to the cutting-edge SRF R&D program within the SRF S&T Department in support of the Accelerator Division to advance SRF technologies for particle accelerators, especially developing next generation conduction-cooled SRF cryomodule technology for broader applications. The overarching skill sets you will provide are mechanical engineering, cryogenic thermal design, finite element analysis such as ANSYS and CST Studio simulations and modeling, as well as hands-on capabilities in designing, building, and assembling SRF cavities/cryomodules and related components.

In this job you will:
  • Perform the mechanical and thermal design/analysis/simulation of the SRF cavity/cryomodule and related components.
  • Build and assembly SRF cavities/cryomodules and related components.
  • Document results through tech notes, journal papers, and conference papers. Present results at team meetings, project meetings and conferences.
  • Travel may be required to attend conferences, workshops, vendor visit.
  • Occasional off-shift work may be required for testing.
Experience
  • Preferred: 2 or more years Design and analysis supporting the development of SRF cavities/cryomodules and related components
  • Preferred: 2 or more years Repair and maintenance of hardware components in complex systems.
Education
  • Bachelor's Degree Mechanical Engineering required
  • Master's Degree Mechanical Engineering preferred
Experience and Education Exchange

Education above the minimum may be substituted for experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Design & drafting tools such as Autodesk Inventor and SolidWorks.
  • Mechanical and thermal modeling & simulation tools such as ANSYS.
  • Preferred: Electromagnetism modeling & simulation tools such as CST Studio.
  • Demonstrate good understanding of the mechanical engineering and materials behaviors at room temperature and cryogenic temperatures.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Coordination skills interacting with team members of diverse backgrounds.
