Primary Purpose of the Organization:
The Department of Facilities Management functions is to design, construct, maintain and operate the physical facilities of the University. The number one objective of the department is to provide and maintain facilities that will enhance and support the mission and academic goals of the University. Our approach is centered upon providing a superior level of customer service.
Primary Purpose of the Position:
This position serves as a Contributing-level Mechanical Preventive Maintenance Technician within the Department of Facilities Maintenance at Fayetteville State University. The role supports the routine inspection, servicing, and basic preventive maintenance of mechanical systems, including HVAC and related building systems.
Under close to moderate supervision, the technician performs standardized maintenance tasks, assists with troubleshooting, and helps ensure the safe and efficient operation of campus facilities.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.


  • A valid driver's license. Must have and maintain an acceptable driving record, preferably five or more years of driving experience with no more than one minor at fault accident or violation in the past three years.
Knowledge skills and abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of mechanical systems and preventive maintenance practices
  • Ability to follow established procedures and checklists
  • Ability to use basic hand and power tools safely
  • Ability to recognize and report equipment issues, but not independently diagnose complex problems
  • Basic computer skills for entering work orders and maintenance data
  • Ability to work with close supervision and guidance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of HVAC systems and mechanical equipment
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance tasks in a commercial or institutional setting
  • Familiarity with work order systems or CMMS (such as TMA)
  • Technical or vocational training in mechanical or HVAC systems
