About the Opportunity:

Washington County Environmental Health Branch within the Public Health Division is recruiting seasonal Mosquito Technicians (multiple openings) to support the mosquito control program. This position performs mosquito identification, traverses diverse and uneven terrains like wetlands, forests, and urban areas to set up and collect mosquito traps. This position also conducts laboratory processing of mosquitoes for testing, surveys a wide variety of aquatic habitats for mosquito larva, and conducts mosquito control activities using integrated pest management protocols in order to improve or sustain community safety. This position typically works in outdoor environments with varying weather conditions and often works independently or in small teams. Additionally, this position may involve interaction with the public and requires adherence to safety protocols.

Work Schedule: Due to the nature of the duties, this position is NOT eligible for telecommuting/remote work. It is essential that the incumbent has flexibility in scheduling, including occasionally working early mornings.

Current openings are Seasonal positions with a tentative end date of September 18, 2026, working up to 40 hours per week. Seasonal positions will accrue sick time but arenot eligiblefor vacation accrual, holiday pay, or othercustomarybenefits such as medical, dental, or vision insurance benefits.

Ideal Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Be motivated and have the ability to be dependable and work independently and as part of a team.

  • Basic understanding of mosquito biology or a willingness to learn with strong observational and data collection skills.

  • The ability to work in varied weather and environmental conditions.

  • The ability to perform physical tasks such as walking long distances, carrying equipment, and setting up mosquito traps.

  • Knowledge of mosquito control, environmental science, or fieldwork is beneficial but not required as training is provided.

  • Detail-oriented with effective communication skills to interact with colleagues and the public.

Minimum and Special Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Associate's degree in biology, environmental science, public health, or related field;
    OR

  • Completion of 15 credits of college-level courses in biology, environmental science, public health, or a related field of study;AND One (1) year of experience performing work in fields such as fisheries, wildlife technicians, pest control, or wetland management;
    OR

  • 18 months of work experience performing work in a field or laboratory environment within the fields of biology, environmental science, or public health.

Additional Requirements

  • Must possess a driver's license valid in the State of Oregon and have an acceptable driving record per Washington County Policy:Driver's License & Records Policy-Vehicles.

  • Some positions in this classification may require the ability to obtain, within four (4) weeks of appointment, a Public Pesticide Applicator's License required by the State of Oregon, Department of Agriculture for Public Health pesticide applications.
