Position Summary
The Division of Genetics and Metabolism in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (www.med.unc.edu/pediatrics/gene) seeks an ABGC certified/eligible genetic counselor. This is a Clinical Instructor, fixed-term faculty appointment. Strong candidates will have experience in pediatric inpatient settings and with pediatric and adult outpatient genetic clinics. Excellent counseling, teaching, organizational skills, and independence are essential qualities in the candidate. Competitive salary commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities include performing patient intakes, providing genetic counseling and follow-up in general pediatric and adult genetics and metabolism clinics. The successful candidate will participate in determining the appropriate laboratories to send genetic and metabolic testing and providing follow-up to patients/families on all genetic test results. All providers are expected to maintain accurate and timely medical documentation through the UNC Electronic Medical Record system ( EPIC). In addition, this individual will have scheduled on-call time, working closely with the MD clinical geneticists in the inpatient setting, during weekdays. Opportunities will be available to engage in ongoing research projects.

The Pediatric Genetics team includes physicians, genetic counselors, metabolic dieticians, and nurse practitioners, who work collaboratively in caring for their patients and families with compassion and evidence-based care. We also have an active accredited categorical and combined pediatric- genetics residency training program. Our team works closely with colleagues from across the medical center, including Cancer Genetics, Maternal Fetal Medicine, and the Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetic Laboratories. Faculty members in the Division are actively involved in hearing-loss research, mucopolysaccharidosis, and other LSD translational research, clinical studies evaluating the utility of using next generation sequencing for newborn screening, quality improvement projects and with the state birth defects registry.

The North Carolina Children's Hospital is part of a busy quaternary care medical center and a major referral center for children with complex conditions in the state and region. Providers at the North Carolina Children's Hospital care for children in inpatient settings as well as through a comprehensive children's outpatient center located in the same building, enabling children to see multiple specialists in a single visit.
