The KAPL machinists both manufacture test specimens and fabricate a variety of hardware for several laboratories and programs across the Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL). Daily work activities include, but are not limited to, the set up and operation of Mazak milling machines and lathes, Mitsubishi wire and sinker EDM machines, as well as several manual pieces of equipment and other CNC machining tools. Having the ability to work both independently and within a teaming environment to produce the desired components for the Engineering (Sponsor) community is essential. Close tolerance drawings, sketches and written/verbal guidance are regularly provided from the Sponsor community and the adherence to those tolerances is of the utmost importance. Machinists are encouraged to have regular dialogue with the engineering community to provide feedback if tolerance or machining methods can be improved upon review of the initial job submittal. Both providing direction/instruction to other machinists as well as collaborating on machining methods is highly encouraged amongst the existing team. The use of the program Power Mill is utilized to manufacture more complex projects. Daily maintenance of all equipment within the machine shop along with consistent shop cleanliness is each team member's responsibility and the standard to adhere to.
