Overview:

We are seeking a detail-oriented, proactive Agile Scrum Master to support our suite of software applications for the Industrial Technologies Office (ITO) Better Plants Program. In this role, you will do more than facilitate agile processes-you'll seek and seize opportunities to deliver value across the team and the program. Your ideas for improving efficiency, communication, and results will be welcomed and encouraged, and you'll have the autonomy to propose and lead initiatives that go beyond traditional Scrum Master responsibilities. This may include process improvements, tool adoption, cross-functional collaboration, or any new ways to better serve our program's mission. This position resides in the Research Application Development in the Secure and Digital Manufacturing Section, Manufacturing Science Division, Energy Science and Technology atOak Ridge National Laboratory(ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Scrum Master Duties
    • Facilitate agile ceremonies, including daily standups, sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives
    • Promote and support agility, team collaboration, and continuous improvement
    • Remove impediments and foster an environment for high-performing development teams
  • Project Logistics & Coordination
    • Manage and maintain the program's GitHub issues board, triaging and organizing issues across multiple applications
    • Coordinate team workload, prioritize features and bug fixes, and track deliverables
    • Align project timelines and milestones with ORNL and DOE requirements
    • Develop, maintain, and communicate project schedules and resource assignments
  • Stakeholder Reporting & Communication
    • Prepare regular progress updates, reports, and documentation for internal teams and DOE leadership
    • Document and communicate project risks, changes, and critical decisions
    • Facilitate meetings and serve as liaison between software team, DOE, and other stakeholders
  • Continuous Improvement & Value Creation
    • Proactively identify gaps, inefficiencies, or opportunities for improvement-in processes, communication, or tools-and take initiative to address them
    • Drive or participate in initiatives that go beyond Scrum Master scope, such as process innovation, technology adoption, or facilitating cross-team collaborations
    • Champion a culture of curiosity, experimentation, and commitment to the Better Plants Program's mission
    • Help QA test non-technical issues (bug fixes, small enhancements)

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in Computer Science, Engineering, Project Management, or related field (or equivalent experience) and at least 5 years of experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Proven experience as a Scrum Master, Project Manager, or similar role in a software development environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Agile and Scrum methodologies.
  • Experience managing software project boards (GitHub, Jira, or similar).
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience reporting to senior leadership/external stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Software development experience.
  • Scrum Master certification (CSM, PSM, etc.).
  • Experience with engineering / industrial energy efficiency.
  • Experience working with government, national labs, or energy-focused organizations.
  • Familiarity with DOE reporting requirements or scientific research environments.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
  • For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required.
  • Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions.
