What to Expect
The Engineering Technician will join the Austin Passive Safety Test Team at Tesla, focusing on executing, analyzing, and reporting on vehicle engineering development, regulatory certification, and consumer protection crash testing within strict program timelines. This role involves hands-on preparation and maintenance of test vehicles and equipment, ensuring high-quality and repeatable results in a collaborative, team-based environment. The team comprises test engineers and technicians specializing in vehicle and mechanical systems, instrumentation, anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs), abuse testing, flammability testing, pendulum testing, fabrication, and imaging.

What You'll Do
  • Prepare test vehicles to match desired configurations based on written and oral requests and procedures, ensuring quality and repeatability
  • Install data acquisition equipment, including sensors such as accelerometers, gyros, strain gauges, load cells, pressure transducers, and current sensors
  • Install and remove vehicle test fixtures, lab equipment, and ballast weights as specified in test requests
  • Maintain sensor library, perform sensor repairs, and coordinate calibration activities for all instrumentation
  • Design and create custom brackets, wire harnesses, and fixtures for testing purposes
  • Set up and deploy high-speed cameras, lighting, and lenses for test environments, selecting appropriate imaging devices
  • Maintain and repair test equipment to ensure consistent functionality and a professional, organized laboratory environment

What You'll Bring
  • Extensive experience diagnosing, repairing, and replacing components on passenger vehicles, with Tesla vehicle experience preferred
  • Proficiency in operating hand and power tools, shop equipment for vehicle and lab servicing, with fabrication or machine shop skills preferred
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in confined spaces within test vehicles
  • Capability to work outdoors in varying Austin temperatures year-round
  • Strong computer skills for diagnosis, communication, and reporting using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Tesla-specific diagnostic tools
  • Associate's Degree in Engineering or Automotive Technology, or equivalent experience
  • Valid driver's license and proficiency with diagnostic scan tools, scopes, meters, and other test equipment
