Position Summary:



  • This sequence of job titles is structured to reflect a Baccalaureate-degreed employee's career path and increasing skills and experience, building to professional licensure in the areas of Architectural Planning or Interior Design, and leading to eligibility for Project Management or Medical Planner level positions. The work described below encompasses the general range of tasks and responsibilities. Specific tasks and responsibilities will vary dependent upon the specific discipline (Architectural vs. Interior Design), but overlaps in duties are inherent in the two disciplines.

  • Applicable to all positions in this description, working collaboratively as part of a professional team with lower and higher level staff, and performing work under the supervision of more senior staff:



    • Plans, designs, and prepares architectural or interior design project scopes, including concept drawings, presentation drawings, graphic presentations and other relevant documents relating to additions, alterations and renovations.
    • Develops space layouts, furniture placement studies and other documents relating to space planning, master planning, space analyses, and designs of additions, alterations and renovations.
    • Works independently on limited-scale projects, with oversight of registered design professionals.


    • Analyzes project and work requests submitted by clients for feasibility; Works with clients to ascertain programmatic requirements


    • Researches existing fire safety and building construction information to determine factors impacting the planned project.
    • Investigates applicable fire and other code/regulatory requirements for applicability to the project.
    • Assesses appropriateness of project relative to program requirements, location and adjacent programs.
    • Develops and assembles project scope of work, planning narrative, and other relevant information to effectively communicate project requirements to the project management team.
    • Performs (or coordinates efforts to) conduct field surveys and measurement of existing space to confirm of field conditions and gain a greater understanding of program or problems to be addressed.
    • Provides design/drafting support to other Planners/Designers, Medical Planners and Senior Planning staff when required.
    • Working with Environmental Graphics Design Project Manager, participates in the process of developing signage, wayfinding & graphics for specific projects.
    • Participates in the process of developing, reviewing, and updating/maintaining drawing standards, and standard finishes and specifications.
    • Participates in peer reviews of design efforts of more senior Architecture+ Planning staff.


  • Additional responsibilities applicable to Planner/ Designer II:

    • Works independently on larger-scale projects, with guidance and oversight of registered design professionals
    • When directed, supervises and oversees the work of other team staff on specific projects.
    • Serves as departmental representative (alone or with departmental colleagues) for space committees of affiliates when directed
    • With the input of others, develops, reviews, and oversees the efforts of updating/maintaining drawing standards, and standard finishes and specifications.
    • Provides direction and oversight to the work of consultant designers.
    • Develops presentations for internal and external parties under the guidance of more senior designers, and may lead presentations to internal parties.


  • Additional responsibilities applicable to Planner/ Designer III:


    • Works independently on larger-scale projects, provides guidance and oversight to less senior staff and outside consultants.
    • Routinely supervises and oversees the work of other team staff on specific projects, providing guidance, leadership and motivational support.
    • Leads and manages the development, reviews, and oversight of efforts to update/maintain drawing standards, and standard finishes and specifications.
    • Provides direction and oversight to the work of consultant designers.
    • Develops presentations for internal and external parties; leads presentations to internal parties.





Minimum Qualifications

Education:



  • Associate's degree in architecture, interior design, or related field is required.
  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, interior design, or related field is preferred.



Work Experience:



  • Related work experience in design of architectural systems for buildings in accordance with the following schedule:
  • Associate's Degree: 8 yrs. Planning/Design/Engineering
    Bachelor's Degree: 4 yrs. Planning/Design/Engineering



Licensure/Certification:



  • Planner/ Designer III: Title requires that the employee possess registration as a professional architect in the State of Maryland, or certified interior designer in the State of Maryland.



Salary Range: Minimum 28.90/hour - Maximum 47.71/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
