Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB's Atlanta office is seeking a skilled Transportation Planner to join our growing team. This is an opportunity for a motivated early-career planner to help shape the future of mobility in the Atlanta region and across the state-working on transit expansion, active transportation, safety planning, and comprehensive transportation planning efforts.

We're looking for someone who has a solid foundation in transportation planning, is eager to learn from experienced colleagues, and is ready to take the next step in their career on a collaborative, supportive team. As a Transportation Planner, you'll have opportunities to lead tasks and grow toward project management and/or subject-matter leadership.

Once you join our group, you will play a key role in delivering a variety of transportation planning projects. You will contribute to transit and corridor planning, help advance active transportation plans for biking, walking, trails, and complete streets, and support safety planning initiatives grounded in Safe System principles. Your work will also include Comprehensive Transportation Plans (CTPs), long-range multimodal planning, and multimodal corridor studies with conceptual alternatives analysis.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead tasks and support multimodal transportation planning projects.
  • Conduct and synthesize data-driven analyses (travel demand, safety, access, equity, and performance measures) into clear, compelling planning recommendations.
  • Develop technical memoranda, reports, graphics, and presentations that communicate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Support public and stakeholder engagement, including workshops, open houses, small group meetings, and online engagement.
  • Coordinate with internal teams (planning, engineering, urban design, environmental, and GIS) to develop integrated solutions.
  • Manage tasks, budgets, and schedules for defined components of larger projects; contribute to project management activities.
  • Assist with proposal development, scopes of work, and level-of-effort estimates for planning pursuits.
  • Mentor junior staff by reviewing work, providing feedback, and modeling collaborative team behavior.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Urban/Regional Planning, Transportation Planning, Civil Engineering, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • 3-5+ years of experience in transportation planning
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing planning reports.
  • Comfort working with data and analysis tools (e.g., GIS, Excel, transportation datasets, safety data) and interpreting results for planning applications.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team setting, contribute to a positive team culture, and coordinate with colleagues across disciplines and offices.
  • AICP or other relevant professional certification preferred (or ability/intent to obtain in the near term).
