What you'll do

We're excited to announce a dynamic opportunity for a talented Import Specialist to join our growing team! This role offers the flexibility and convenience of fully remote work, allowing you to contribute from anywhere in the United States.

Viasat's Global Trade Compliance (GTC) team enables international growth by ensuring the seamless, lawful transfer of goods and technical data across all business divisions. By integrating compliance into the entire product lifecycle-from inception to end-of-life-we serve as a critical strategic partner for engineers, program managers, and government entities alike. Our role requires a high degree of geopolitical agility; we monitor shifting world affairs in real-time to interpret complex regulations, providing the expert guidance necessary to navigate an ever-changing global landscape.


The day-to-day

  • Determine and document the appropriate classification designations, including Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) and Schedule B codes, for all parts and equipment.
  • Monitor shipments and oversee the customs clearance process to ensure timely and compliant delivery.
  • Interpret and apply international trade regulations as necessary to maintain organizational adherence to global standards.
  • Provide expert guidance and specific requirements to Viasat personnel regarding U.S. and international trade regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with internal requestors to obtain the detailed product information required for the accurate classification of imported materials.
  • Support and manage the ongoing professional relationships with customs brokers and other third-party service providers.
  • Calculate and provide relevant import tax information to various Viasat stakeholders for financial and operational planning.
  • Review, validate, and maintain all import documentation to ensure full compliance with U.S. Customs and Border Protection requirements.
  • Maintain an advanced knowledge of the field by staying current on all relevant regulatory changes and geopolitical shifts.
  • Review commercial contracts to identify and address specific global trade requirements and obligations.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of required shipping documentation, including commercial invoices, carnets, Duty-Free Entries (DFE), and Return Merchandise Authorizations (RMA).
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of internal import control compliance measures and best practices.

What you'll need

  • 2-4 years of experience specifically within the field of import trade compliance.
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of U.S. Customs regulations as outlined in 19 CFR.
  • Hands-on experience working with Post Summary Corrections (PSCs), Chapter 98, Cross Rulings, and Customs Forms 28 and 29.
  • Understanding of Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) operations.
  • Exhibit a strong background in HTS and Schedule B product classification, including a firm grasp of the General Rules of Interpretation (GRI).
  • Strong knowledge regarding Section 301, 232, and 122 tariffs, as well as the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
  • Proficiency in using OCR/SAP systems and navigating Export Record Reviews (ERR) and the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE).
  • Experience in developing and adhering to corporate policies, standard operating procedures, and work instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively both as an autonomous contributor and as a collaborative team member.

What will help you on the job

  • Hold a basic working knowledge of International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) as they pertain to import activities.
  • Maintain familiarity with various non-U.S. trade regulations to support global operations.
  • Apply specific knowledge regarding the implementation and automation of trade-related workflow processes.
  • Experience conducting internal audits and managing the Importer Self-Assessment (ISA) process.

Salary range

$57,000.00 - $90,000.00 / annually.
For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $71,000.00- $106,000.00/ annually
