Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering ( ESE) is one of eight academic units in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. The Department's primary focus is on research and graduate education at the interface of the environment and human health, with an increasing emphasis on undergraduate education. The Department has tenured and tenure-track faculty, academic fixed-term faculty and research faculty. The current student body comprises approximately 120 graduate students and 50 undergraduate students.
Position Summary
The successful candidate will perform research on the development, modification, materials characterization, and testing of membranes for water purification as part of the activities of the UNC Superfund Research Program ( SRP) (https://sph.unc.edu/superfund-pages/srp/). The UNC SRP develops new solutions, interventions and treatments to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and other inorganic arsenic-associated diseases. The removal of arsenic and other contaminants from water using membrane technology is one such intervention. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with engineers, chemists and material scientists, and will interact and learn from the broader UNC SRP team which includes, among others, toxicologists, health scientists, and science communicators. Specific activities by the postdoctoral researcher will include but not be limited to the preparation, testing, and characterization of membranes for the removal of target contaminants. In addition to research activities, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students, proposal writing, and other related academic activities as part of her/his postdoctoral training.

The position is anticipated to begin in Fall 2026, for duration of one year, with possibility of extension to a second year and third year, depending on satisfactory performance.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Preferred qualifications include: An established record of research productivity is highly desired. Preference will be given to candidates with experience on membrane technology, broadly speaking, and other water purification technologies. Experience in the analysis of contaminants in water (e.g., metals, micropollutants, emerging contaminants) and/or (organic/polymer) material synthesis will be seen favorably but is not required.
