DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Corrections Automotive Mechanic Trade Instructor, you will lead a structured vocational program designed to provide inmates with classroom instruction and practical, on-the-job training. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering a specialized curriculum that covers the standard practices, methods, and procedures of the automotive trade, including the inspection, repair, and overhaul of diverse machinery such as automobiles, trucks, buses, motorized farm equipment, and tractor-trailers. Additionally, you will manage the daily operations of inmate work crews by planning schedules, assigning work orders, and inspecting completed tasks to ensure the facility operates efficiently. Maintaining a safe and secure environment is a core component of your duties; therefore, you will enforce strict order and discipline, maintain detailed documentation of inmate progress and attendance, and conduct tool inventories and searches to ensure all materials are strictly accounted for.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $51,868.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Four years of experience in the diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and replacement of various components and systems used in automobiles, trucks, or construction or heavy equipment; or
  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the automotive mechanic trade; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the automotive mechanic trade.
Special Requirements:
  • This position requires possession of an active Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning Technician Certificate issued by an approved provider.
  • This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license.
  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Emissions Inspection Certification.
  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Inspection Mechanic Certification for Class C and Class 7 vehicles.

Other Requirements:
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
