Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The mission of the College of Education is to prepare and develop professionals in vocational teacher education and information/office education through effective teaching, the dissemination of knowledge, generation and application of research, and service to the educational business communities. The College is committed to the purpose of preparing educational and business professionals who are both academically and technically proficient. The teacher education programs share the additional purposes of preparing professional educators who are reflective in practice, committed to the intellectual empowerment of others, and guided by the larger democratic purposes of American education.
Job Duties
INTERNAL POSTING: Open only to applicants currently employed by East Carolina University in the College of Education.

The Assistant Chair will provide overarching support for the Chair and Program Directors. They will support the Chairs in several important areas within the department including Curriculum & Course Management, Student Affairs, Faculty Support, and Academic Program Management. They will also be fundamental in assisting the Chairs with Administrative and Operational duties within the department.

Curriculum and Course Management (20%)

  • Lead discussions/supports in course scheduling and curriculum development; catalog/website updates; **may act as director of a program, depending on departmental needs


Student Affairs (30%)
  • Oversight of undergraduate and/or graduate admissions/advising; student petition and waivers; oversee recruitment and retention efforts
Faculty Support (50%)
  • Facilitating faculty mentorship; coordinating departmental committees; assisting with part-time faculty reviews; new faculty onboarding; new faculty credentialing; academic Program Management; assist with program assessments, accreditation, and reviews; provide undergraduate and graduate program direction; administrative and operational duties; assist Chair with resource allocation; assist Chair with policy implementation; assist with special projects as assigned by the department chair; support for program directors as needed; acting in the chair's absence if needed.
The selected candidate will retain their faculty status and receive an administrative stipend. Contingent upon availability of funding
Minimum Education/Experience

  • PhD or EdD in one of the colleges' program areas from an accredited institution.
  • Full-time faculty who are tenured and hold the rank of associate professor or professor in the College of Education.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Leadership experience with a strong record of scholarship, teaching, and service aligned with the college's mission. Demonstrated ability to foster collaborative relationships and contribute to the college's strategic goals.
  • Experience in working with faculty in the university and college to strengthen undergraduate and graduate level degree offerings within the department.
