Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Surveillance and Data Use (SDU) Unit Manager, California Cancer Reporting and Epidemiologic Surveillance (CalCARES) Program, the Research Data Analyst 3 is responsible for (a) overseeing and performing electronic data linkages between registry data, cohort data, and other databases, (b) supporting the enhancement and quality of CCR research data, (c) participating in the preparation of cancer surveillance reports, web content, and other informational products describing the burden of cancer in California, and (d) creating analytic cancer data files. #CA-SB

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in statistics, biostatistics, or a public health-related field with experience preferred OR demonstrated significant experience in data analysis and management involving large and/or complex data sets.
  • Experience writing code to provide descriptive analysis of data.
  • Extensive data analysis experience using standard statistical techniques, with the ability to summarize and report information and create graphics usable for presentations and publications.
  • Experience working with large datasets.
  • Strong SAS programming skills.
  • Strong analytical and reasoning skills.
  • Ability to be thorough.
  • Strong attention to details skills.
  • Ability to convey cancer statistics in a meaningful way to the general public.
  • Well-rounded knowledge of biostatistics and epidemiology.
  • Knowledge of methods in cancer surveillance.
  • Organizational skills to function independently, keep track of multiple projects, work to meet specific deadlines, and document procedures.
  • Oral and written communication skills to communicate and convey information/data effectively at a professional level with a diverse group of individuals/public.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to learn effectively and to effectively communicate and interface with management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters level education in epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, or a public health-related field is highly desirable.
  • Experience with electronic data linkages is highly desirable.
  • Experience with cancer registry data and operations is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

  • 35% - Oversee and perform electronic data linkages between registry data, cohort data, and other databases.
  • 30% - Support the enhancement and quality of CCR research data.
  • 30% - Participate in the preparation of cancer surveillance reports, web content, and other informational products that describe the burden of cancer in California.

Department Overview

The mission of the Office of Population Health (OPH) is to create, apply, and disseminate knowledge about the many determinants of health in order to improve health and health security and to support activities which improve health equity and eliminate health disparities. One of the larger programs within the OPH is the California Cancer Reporting and Epidemiologic Surveillance (CalCARES) Program. CalCARES partners with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to operate the state mandated California Cancer Registry (CCR), a statewide population-based cancer surveillance system.
