Career Opportunity

We are looking for candidates to fill a Library Aide position at our Wallops Island, Virginia, station. The Surface Combat Systems Center (SCSC) at Wallops Island requires support in management, engineering, operations, and technical expertise for the activation, operation, maintenance, and engineering of equipment, systems, and computer programs. This support is crucial for all Naval Sea Systems Command and Program Executive Office, Integrated Warfare Systems missions and projects conducted at SCSC. SCSC offers live and simulated integrated warfare capabilities in a net-centric maritime environment, aimed at developing, testing, evaluating, and conducting fleet operations and training for the warfighter.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Works under the supervision of a Librarian and Library Technician at the main circulation desk following simple repetitive tasks, including:

    Issuing and receiving library materials.
  • Providing instructions to and explaining library policies and procedures to customers.
  • Recording information such as reports of lost or damaged items, requests for materials, and overdue materials then referring this information to the Library Technician or Librarian.
  • Contact borrowers with status of issued library material via telephoning and issuing overdue notices.
  • Shelve books, magazines, and other materials under the supervision of a Library Technician or Librarian.
  • Access and enter limited routine information in a few screens of the automated database.
  • Perform routine clerical duties, such as referring callers or visitors to appropriate staff, and assists the Library Technician with processing duties such as labeling and stamping, and preparing materials, such as posters or book lists, for events.

Travel

  • This position includes a low level of travel.

Education, Knowledge, Experience, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • General knowledge to include technical library operations; providing technical information services such as web products and maintaining records from various online sources.
  • Basic understanding of cataloging library reference materials.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Clear communication.
  • Ability to answer routine inquiries and refer people requiring professional assistance to the Librarian.
  • Basic knowledge of security requirements for handling, storage, inventory and destruction of classified material in accordance with SECNAV 5510 (series).

  • None

Qualifications

  • Active DoD Secret security clearance is highly desired; however, candidates eligible to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance will be considered. The selected candidate will receive a contingent offer if they do not hold an active clearance. A start date will be established once an interim Secret clearance is granted.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be available to work varying shifts and weekends as required.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various work locations on base.
  • Must maintain the capability to communicate with their supervisor or manager when not in the office.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to frequently traverse stairs.
  • Sitting for long periods, standing, walking, crouching, and kneeling.
  • Reaching, handling, and using equipment, keyboards, and mobile devices.
  • Ability to lift items weighing up to 40 lbs.
