Job Description:

The Automotive/Equipment Mechanic II performs preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on school buses, trucks, vans, and other fleet equipment to ensure safe and reliable transportation for students and staff. The mechanic inspects, services, and repairs gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles, while assisting with maintaining the overall condition and operational readiness of the transportation fleet. This position supports the transportation operation by ensuring all vehicles meet state inspection standards, manufacturer specifications, and school division safety requirements. The mechanic works collaboratively with transportation staff to maintain a safe, dependable fleet and minimize vehicle downtime. This is a 12-month, 240 day Support-Transportation position, reporting to the Fleet Maintenance Manager.



Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of vocational or technical training in automotive or diesel technology is preferred.


  • Language: Ability to speak and understand English; Bilingual is preferred.


  • Certifications: Commercial Drivers License (Class B) is preferred, however, must be willing to obtain within 6 months of hire. Other mechanical/technician certifications preferred, although not required.


  • Experience: At least one year of experience and working knowledge of the operation and repair of gasoline and diesel engines, including maintenance of heavy trucks, school buses, grounds equipment, and other automotive equipment, is highly preferred.



Key Competencies:

  • Vehicle Diagnostics and Repair: Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in school buses, trucks, and fleet vehicles using diagnostic equipment and technical manuals.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Knowledge of fleet preventive maintenance programs including routine inspections, lubrication, adjustments, and component replacement to ensure vehicle reliability and safety.
  • Heavy-Duty Equipment Knowledge: Understanding of diesel and gasoline engine systems, braking systems, transmissions, electrical systems, suspension components, and related heavy-duty vehicle systems.
  • Safety Compliance: Knowledge of state vehicle inspection requirements, transportation safety standards, and school bus mechanical regulations to ensure compliance with applicable laws and policies.
  • Problem Solving: Ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues efficiently, determine root causes of equipment failures, and implement effective repair solutions.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Works collaboratively with transportation supervisors, drivers, transportation staff, and other mechanics to maintain fleet readiness and respond to operational needs.
  • Emergency Response: Ability to respond to road calls and vehicle breakdowns to restore vehicles to safe operating condition and minimize disruption to transportation services.
  • Communication: Ability to communicate clearly with supervisors, transportation staff, and drivers regarding vehicle conditions, repair needs, and maintenance updates.


Core Responsibilities:

  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections on school buses, trucks, vans, and other transportation fleet vehicles.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and engine system issues on gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles.
  • Inspect, repair, and replace components such as brakes, steering systems, suspension systems, transmissions, fuel systems, and electrical systems.
  • Perform vehicle inspections in accordance with state inspection requirements and school division standards.
  • Respond to emergency road calls and perform field repairs on disabled vehicles, as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records, including work orders and inspection documentation.
  • Conduct routine servicing including oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, and fluid checks.
  • Fabricate and repair parts or equipment when necessary, including basic welding and metal work.
  • Ensure vehicles meet safety standards before being returned to service.
  • Maintain shop tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
  • Participate in required training programs, meetings, and in-service sessions to remain current on mechanical systems, diagnostic technology, and transportation safety standards.
  • Support the overall transportation operation to ensure a safe and reliable fleet for student transportation services.



Compensation:



  • Salary Placement for this position is Grade 05; $27.42 to $33.72 hourly, determined by The ACPS Transportation Staff Salary Scale (Additional factors in calculation, including hours, # of days, etc.)



Clearances:



  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.
  • Public Health Compliance - Must follow safety and health protocols.
