Salary: The salary range for this position is $95,000 to $105,000.

Position Summary The Director of the UIC Children's Center provides expertise, oversight, training, and leadership to ensure the UIC Children's Center provides high-quality, developmentally effective, inclusive early learning and care services for the children of University of Illinois Chicago students, faculty, and staff. The UIC Children's Center Director is responsible for the overall administration, programming quality, fiscal management, compliance and continuous improvement of the Children's Center, which is licensed by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Duties & Responsibilities:

Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Provide vision, leadership and direction for all Children's Center operations, ensuring alignment with UIC's mission and nationally recognized best practices in early childhood education.
  • Directly supervise the Assistant Director of the Center and oversee all center professional and support staff.
  • Oversee all administrative functions of the Center including the enrollment process, billing, and hiring of professional and support staff.
  • Develop, implement, and regularly review operational policies and procedures; ensure effective communication and consistent implementation among staff, families, and university stakeholders.
  • Coordinate strategic planning for staff along with goal setting and continuous development of mission, vision, and related objectives

Fiscal Management and Grants
  • Develop, manage, and monitor the Children's Center annual operating budget; approve expenditure and ensure responsible stewardship of funds.
  • Oversee tuition billing, payment collection, and account reconciliation in coordination with Financial Services; address billing inquiries and ensure timely resolution of account issues.
  • Identify, pursue, write, and manage federal, state, and local grants that support program sustainability, access and quality improvement

Human Resources and Staff Development
  • Supervise, evaluate, and support the assistant director and other designated leadership staff; provide coaching, guidance, and performance feedback.
  • In collaboration with UIC Human Resources, lead the recruitment, selection, and hiring of Children's Center administrative and professional teaching staff.
  • In cooperation with the assistant director, plan and facilitate ongoing professional development for staff aligned with licensing, accreditation, and program goals.

Licensing, Accreditation, and Compliance
  • Ensure continuous compliance with DCFS licensing regulations, NAEYC Accreditation criteria, the highest level of quality according to the IL State Quality Rating System, and the Child and Adult Care Food Program.
  • Lead accreditation, licensing renewals, monitoring visits, corrective action plans, and ongoing quality assurance activities

University, Research, and Community Engagement
  • Serve as the primary liaison with university administration, regulatory agencies, professional organizations, and community partners for all matters related to the Center and early childhood care on campus.
  • Collaborate with university departments and partners to support appropriate research activities within the Children's Center.
  • Coordinate and facilitate center experiences for UIC students as appropriate, ensuring all legal, licensing, and compliance requirements are met.
  • Establish and maintain community partnerships that enhance resources and services for children, families, and staff.


Facilities, Operations, and Risk Management
  • Oversee facility maintenance, renovations, and improvements to ensure safe, clean, and developmentally appropriate learning environments.
  • Plan, prioritize, and oversee physical space updates and capital improvements, integrating facility needs into annual and long-range budgeting to support safe, high-quality learning environments.
  • Provide leadership in support of university risk management, emergency preparedness, and information security requirements


Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in early childhood education, child development, or related field.
  • Illinois Director's Credential Level I or 3 semester hours of college credits in administration, leadership, or management.
  • 5 years supervisory and administrative experience in early childhood education and care settings.
  • Thorough knowledge of state and local licensing requirements and accreditation through the National Association For the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
  • Through knowledge of State Quality Rating Systems (ExceleRate) , Creative Curriculum, & Teaching Strategies GOLD.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching and /or administrative experience in an accredited early childhood program.
  • Experience in the administration of early learning programs in a University environment.
