Position Highlights The Fire Services Supervisor oversees daily operations of the university's fire inspection, prevention, system testing, and fire response functions. This role provides direct supervision to fire inspectors and technical staff, ensuring consistent application of fire codes, highquality inspections, and effective support during fire alarms, system failures, and emergency incidents. The Fire Services Supervisor coordinates inspection workflows, schedules fire system testing, directs staff during emergency responses, and ensures timely and accurate documentation of incidents. This position serves as a technical expert and primary liaison with campus departments, contractors, Facilities Management, and responding fire authorities. Responsibilities include staff development, performance management, code interpretation, plan review support, and ensuring that the campus maintains compliance with NFPA standards, the International Fire Code, local requirements, and university policies. This position requires strong leadership, communication skills, and the ability to manage a large volume of work in a complex multibuilding environment that includes academic, laboratory, residential, and specialuse facilities.

This position requires out of town, overtime, off shift, weekend and holiday work.

This position requires travel to remote sites such as mountain tops, mines and most environments in between.

Duties & Responsibilities

Supervision & Leadership

Supervises fire inspectors and assigned fire safety staff. Assigns, schedules, and monitors daily workloads. Conducts performance evaluations and oversees training and professional development. Provides field guidance, decision-making support, and conflict resolution.

Fire Response, Emergency Support & Incident Coordination

Responds to fire alarms, fire system activations, and emergency incidents as part of the unit's fire response function. Assumes supervisory responsibilities during fire events, ensuring coordination between university personnel and responding fire agencies. Provides onscene technical expertise regarding fire protection systems, utilities, hazardous materials, and building layouts. Assists with fire origin-and-cause determinations in coordination with senior inspectors. Coordinates after-action reviews, incident reporting, and followup corrective actions. Responds outside normal business hours as required.

Fire & Life Safety Operations

Oversees building inspections, construction inspections, special event reviews, and fire safety audits. Ensures completion of fire alarm/sprinkler testing, fire pump testing, extinguisher programs, and system maintenance work. Reviews inspection reports for accuracy and quality. Ensures building occupancy issues and hazards are corrected promptly.

Code Enforcement & Technical Expertise

Provides advanced interpretation of fire codes and NFPA standards. Advises architects, engineers, project managers, and contractors on fire code compliance. Reviews construction plans and fire protection system submittal's as needed. Supports enforcement actions and compliance documentation.

Program Management & Administration

Assists with budget planning, equipment procurement, and resource allocation. Oversees inspection scheduling, compliance tracking, and metrics reporting. Develops and updates internal procedures, response guidelines, and training materials. Prepares reports for leadership, committees, and regulatory reviews.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of fire codes, NFPA standards, and fire protection systems.
  • Ability to lead staff in both routine and emergency environments.
  • Strong communication, coordination, and decision-making skills under pressure.
  • Ability to read plans, evaluate system performance, and analyze complex hazards.
  • Skilled in documentation, inspection software, and incident reporting.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50lbs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Certification in the following: Fire Officer II, Fire Inspector, HazMat Operations, Plans Reviewer
  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive according to
    the University Fleet Safety Policy.

As a campus with residential housing facilities, the Main Campus ASR also includes a combined Annual Fire Safety report with information on fire statistics and fire safety systems, policies, and procedures.
