Job Summary

Under general direction of the Hospital Administrator, the Anatomic Pathology Diagnostic Services Manager provides day-to-day management and administrative support to the Anatomic Pathology Service, including Biopsy, Dermapathology, Necropsy, Histology, and Immunohistochemistry. Responsible for ensuring that laboratory services are performed efficiently in a service-oriented manner, meeting quality assurance standards, safety standards, and that all users of the service are provided with high quality laboratory support. Provides scheduling, safety training and coordinates the daily activities of career and student employees, providing a wide scope of diagnostic laboratory, patient care services, and clinical research support, located in a large, complex facility. Incumbent provides staff supervision and management. Works closely with the Service Chief regarding lab operations and residency training program support. Conduct employee recruitment, management and performance management. Manages appropriate staffing levels for the department, evaluates competency of the pathology staff, creating development opportunities as necessary. Responsible for budget oversight. Development of periodic management reports and analysis as assigned. Oversight of departmental computers, microscopes, pathology waste plan, long range planning, archival storage, complex health & safety and facility maintenance issues.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience in either histology or necropsy with experience with ensuring regulatory compliance in either histology or necropsy.
  • Management & supervisory skills including motivation of employees, change implementation, goal setting, position recruitment, staff training & development, work assignment, team building, performance evaluation, corrective/disciplinary action, and conflict resolution, problem-solving, leadership, strategic planning, budget development, and analytical skills.
  • Skills to understand, interpret, & apply EH&S requirements, Medical Waste Plans, Injury /Illness Prevention Plans, Chemical Hygiene Plans, a wide variety of university policies/procedures, state laws, or regulations from federal or state agencies, relevant to a histology and necropsy facility.
  • Skills to define, troubleshoot, make judgments sufficient to review materials & implement system & policy changes for dissemination to others.
  • Time management & organizational skills to successfully prioritize & complete workload & activities that have immediate & conflicting deadlines.
  • Skill to manage an inventory control and equipment management program for supplies, equipment and chemicals (including controlled substances) to optimize cost savings and while avoiding service disruptions.
  • Interpersonal oral and written communication skills including the skills to interact effectively with a diverse group of people including veterinarians, residents, associated staff, animal care personnel, students, faculty, researchers, visitors and the public.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge and skill in managing a very large, highly complex, necropsy or other scientific facility and experience managing performance of technical personnel with a diverse expertise in veterinary anatomic pathology diagnostics, including necropsy and histology lab areas.
  • Experience managing a histology lab or necropsy service.
  • Knowledge of the relative roles of faculty, staff and administrators, and the protocols for communications and interactions between these parties in the University environment.
  • Make sound decisions on complex laboratory or personnel-related issues with little to no direct input from supervisor.
  • Knowledge of VMTH/UC operations, policies, and personnel administration to maintain laboratory protocols and associated records in accordance with the VMTH.

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

Work Environment

No eating or drinking in laboratory areas.
