Boys Town is seeking a Manager, Communications Engineering to lead a high-performing technical team (4) responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining enterprise communication systems that ensure reliable, secure, and scalable connectivity across the organization. This role oversees engineering operations related to voice, data, network infrastructure, and unified communications platforms both on-premises and in the cloud. The Manager provides strategic direction, drives continuous improvement, and ensures alignment between communications technologies and organizational needs. This includes managing complex projects, optimizing system performance, and partnering with IT, security, and business stakeholders to deliver seamless communication solutions. The ideal candidate brings strong leadership capabilities, deep technical expertise in communications and networking engineering and the ability to manage both operational demands and long-term technology strategies. This role is critical to supporting organizational effectiveness, operational continuity, and future-ready communication capabilities.

Location: On Site

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Provides leadership and direction in the strategic design, implementation and maintenance of communications systems.
  • Designs and implements strategic plans for communications technologies and operations.
  • Assesses organizational needs for new or modified communications systems.
  • Hires, trains, and evaluates staff.
  • Consults with users, management, and technicians, and makes recommendations for changes and updates.
  • Manages daily operations and oversees a team in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining communications systems and infrastructure; participates in repair processes and installs and optimizes equipment as needed.
  • Initiates actions to prevent recurrence of issues through analysis, user education, and training.
  • Manages the administration of real time monitoring systems and critical communication applications; oversees the trending and capacity analysis of the communications systems.
  • Manages the integration of communications systems.
  • Recommends and budgets for the purchase of new equipment and services.
  • Researches products and vendors based on projected growth of communication systems and identifies necessary upgrades.
  • Researches, evaluates, and oversees the implementation of new technologies.
  • Travels to various Boys Town locations as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership technique, and coordination of resources in a non-profit organization. Knowledge of organizational strategies and ability to apply those strategies in practice.
  • Knowledge of best practices, methodologies, and practical application of communications engineering and technologies.
  • Ability to understand the needs of the organization and anticipate technology requirements.
  • Extensive knowledge of VOIP, PBX, voicemail, TDM, and ACD's.
  • High degree of professionalism and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate results and formulate proactive solutions for problem avoidance and resolution.
  • Excellent critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate with individuals at all levels in the organization and with external contacts in an articulate, professional manner while maintaining necessary degree of confidentiality.
  • Ability to successfully lead a team of associates and complex projects.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination or education and experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in communications engineering, including management experience required.
  • Ability to provide own transportation (mileage reimbursed) to complete travel requirements of the job required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certifications such as CCNP or CCNA or similar professional certifications and specialized training related to communications and network administration preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, EQUIPMENT USAGE, WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Position requires moderate physical activity. Handling of average weight objects 30 pounds and up to 100 pounds with assistance on occasion, standing, walking, or at a keyboard, workstation, or desk.Work is typically in a normal office administrative or computer environment involving minimal exposure to physical risks.
