Senior Mechanical Engineer

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead HVAC system design for commercial construction projects. This role is responsible for developing code-compliant, buildable mechanical designs from concept through issued-for-construction (IFC) documents.

You'll work closely with project managers, engineers, and field teams to deliver coordinated designs that translate smoothly from engineering to installation. This is a hands-on technical role that also provides mentorship to junior engineers and helps maintain high engineering quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Design Leadership

  • Lead HVAC system design from concept and basis-of-design through permit and IFC drawings
  • Select system types, size equipment, and develop control strategies
  • Design and troubleshoot air-side and water-side mechanical systems
  • Ensure compliance with California building and energy codes
  • Review calculations, duct/pipe sizing, schedules, and equipment selections
  • Perform constructability and coordination reviews to ensure designs are practical for installation

Project Collaboration

  • Work with project managers, contractors, and clients to develop effective design solutions
  • Participate in site walks and existing condition assessments
  • Provide construction support including submittal reviews, RFIs, and design clarifications
  • Coordinate work across internal teams and external engineering partners
  • Help improve engineering standards, processes, and tools

Qualifications

  • 7-10 years of experience in commercial HVAC or mechanical system design
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, equipment selection, and installation practices
  • Experience with load calculation software (HAP, Trace 700, EnergyPro, or similar)
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD; Revit experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of California building and energy codes
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
