Overview

Join Our Team as a Surgical Technologist Trainee! Are you ready to launch your career in surgical services while still in high school? Our Surgical Technologist Trainee opportunity, offered through a recognized Career Pathways Academic Program, combines hands-on, work-based learning with classroom instruction to help you build a strong foundation for a future in healthcare.

In this role, you'll become an important member of the surgical team, helping facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures. You'll collaborate closely with surgeons, nurses, and other team members to ensure the operating room environment is safe, instrumentation functions properly, and every procedure is performed under conditions that maximize patient safety.

Under the direction of the Career Pathways Academic Program, you'll assist in providing care and comfort to patients in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. You'll perform only those tasks and responsibilities for which you have received proper education, clinical experience, and demonstrated competency. This role calls for clinical skill, teamwork, initiative, sound judgment, and a strong commitment to patient-centered care.

Responsibilities
  • Handles and prepares instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary for surgical procedures in the assigned specialty area.

  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and surgical team during procedures.

  • Reviews patient documentation (H&P, consents, radiographic reports) to verify accuracy and procedural readiness.

  • Assists with scrub, circulating, and second assisting duties as appropriate during surgical procedures.

  • Maintains the sterile field and ensures adherence to infection control and safety standards.

  • Cleans, organizes, and maintains operating rooms, equipment, and supplies, including room turnover and inventory support.

  • Complies with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, educational expectations, and maintains required certifications and competencies.


Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Participants will be enrolled in Black Hawk College's 2 Year Surgical Technologist Program
  • Must meet the admissions requirment for the program at Black Hawk College
  • Participants must be willing to transfer out of their current role to start working in tandem with the program
  • Please note that this program is extremely rigorous. Students that earn lower than a C on any exam throughout the program are dropped.
  • Must work in the Surg Tech role for 2-years full-time (.8 FTE or higher), post completion of program. Failure to do so will result in reimbursement of program cost.
  • Failure to successfully complete the program or fulfill the commitment piece will result in participant reimbursement of costs
