Position Summary

Base work location may also include: Charlotte, NC; Asheville, NC; Sylva, NC and Salem, SC.

This position provides comprehensive support for environmental and select health and safety responsibilities within various linear and distributed business units across the Carolinas West region as part of the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) organization. Supported areas include Hydro, Solar, Power Grid Operations (PGO), Piedmont Natural Gas (NGBU), and Project Management & Construction (PMC) projects. This posting will be used to fill two positions in western half of Carolinas with preferred locations in the upstate of South Carolina or western North Carolina and the other location supporting the larger Charlotte Metro area.

The role involves handling basic to moderately complex technical tasks in a wide range of environmental disciplines, ensuring compliance both with company EHS standards and with federal, state, and local regulations. You will independently identify and develop solutions using sound technical judgment.

Key responsibilities include developing, implementing, and maintaining environmental programs, systems, and procedures. The position also provides regulatory interpretation and technical advice, generates both required regulatory and internal environmental reports, and remains up-to-date with government requirements-consulting internal environmental subject matter experts as needed.

Responsibilities

  • This position is ideal for individuals looking to serve as the primary contact for environmental compliance across multiple business units focused on building a smarter energy future. The role covers essential activities to ensure adherence to environmental laws, regulations, and corporate standards. Key responsibilities include developing, implementing, and maintaining environmental programs, systems, and procedures. You'll coordinate responses to environmental incidents-such as spills or releases-and handle notifications to regulatory agencies including agency inspections.
  • Additional duties include providing regulatory interpretation and technical guidance, conducting field observations to confirm compliance with company procedures, and offering coaching when necessary. You will participate in EHS compliance and management system audits and collaborate with subject matter experts and internal clients to ensure thorough implementation of EHS programs and policies.
  • The position involves monitoring to prevent EHS incidents and hazards, as well as investigating any incidents, accidents, injuries, or complaints. You'll also manage administrative tasks such as budgeting, special projects, employee training, emergency preparedness, and quality assurance programs. Building positive relationships with peers, clients, and management will be essential to effectively support work activities. Strong organizational and time management skills are required to handle multiple tasks and projects efficiently.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Note: Dependent on relevant experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

Associate EHS Consultant

  • Bachelors degree in Science, Engineering, Health & Safety or other related degree
  • In lieu of Bachelors degree, High School/GED and 4 years related work experience

EHS Consultant

  • Bachelors degree in Science, Engineering, Health & Safety or other related degree
  • Minimum 3 years related work experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Science, Engineering, Health & Safety or other related degree
  • Professionally licensed (Engineer, Geologist, etc.)
  • Project Management Professional

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Broad knowledge of environmental regulatory compliance requirements, scientific practices, quality assurance principles, auditing principles, and project management.
  • Demonstrated technical skills in multimedia environmental (air, water, waste) areas.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing Erosion and Sediment Control plans and conducting associated field inspections
  • Experience in environmental permitting and compliance.
  • Effective communication (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills with a customer-oriented focus. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with management.
  • Experience developing and implementing systems and processes that comply with environmental laws and regulations, corporate policies, and goals.
  • Experience in negotiating with regulators at the state and/or federal level.
  • Experience in supporting EH&S compliance at multiple facilities/regions within multiple regulatory jurisdictions.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and successfully complete each of them within specified timeframes.
  • Capable of learning quickly, working independently and in a team environment. Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adapt to constantly changing work needs and priorities
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products
  • Working knowledge in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving skills.

Working Conditions

  • Field Mobility Classification - Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.
  • >50% travel to various work sites in assigned area utilizing company provided vehicle as a field based employee with some flexibility for location of residence
  • <10% overnight travel
  • Office environment with exposure to PC terminal and keyboard
  • Office area to be assigned at a Duke Energy facility located in assigned area
  • Outside work during all seasons.
  • Occasional overtime, weekend, outage and callout work.
  • Field, work site, facility visitation required.
  • Ability to safely maneuver on uneven terrain
