This position is currently eligible to work in a hybrid work environment with both onsite and remote work. Residency within the Kansas City-Overland Park-Kansas City, MO-KS Combined Statistical Area, which generally includes the Kansas counties of Johnson, Wyandotte, Leavenworth, Miami, and Linn, and the Missouri counties of Jackson, Clay, Platte, Cass, and Ray, is required.



Job Description

Johnson County Government is seeking a Developer I to join our JIMS development team. This entry-level role is ideal for a developer early in their career who is eager to learn and grow while supporting justice-related systems. Under the guidance of senior developers, you will assist with maintaining legacy systems and developing enhancements that support our Justice partners. The role focuses on Microsoft-based technologies, browser-based applications, and foundational integration work across multiple platforms and databases. This position will remain open until filled.

Responsibilities

    Assist in the design, development, testing, and maintenance of applications on the Microsoft .NET platform
  • Support business-critical systems using Rocket UniVerse and MS SQL databases
  • Help develop and maintain browser-based applications
  • Perform maintenance and minor enhancements to legacy Visual Basic and C# (C-Sharp) codebases
  • Assist with developing and supporting APIs and basic application integrations
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve application issues with guidance from senior staff
  • Collaborate with team members, analysts, and stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver solutions
  • Follow established best practices for coding, testing, documentation, and change management


Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • 0-2 years of professional software development experience (or equivalent internships/education)
  • Foundational experience or coursework in .NET technologies
  • Basic understanding of relational databases such as MS SQL
  • Exposure to Visual Basic and/or C# applications
  • Familiarity with APIs and application integrations
  • Basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Introductory experience with web application development

Soft Skills Required

  • Willingness to learn and take direction from senior developers
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Curiosity and interest in problem-solving and technology
  • Written communication skills, including basic documentation and summaries
  • Oral communication skills for one-on-one and small group discussions
  • Ability to ask questions, seek clarification, and accept feedback

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to Rocket UniVerse (academic or professional)
  • Introductory familiarity with Unix or AIX environments
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field
  • Basic awareness of IIS (Internet Information Services)

Skills & Competencies

  • Foundational problem-solving and debugging skills
  • Ability to follow established development standards and processes
  • Comfortable working with guidance in both legacy and modern technologies
  • Growing ability to manage tasks independently while contributing to a team
