This is the first or entry craft level of the Transmission Rigger hierarchy. A Transmission Rigger I will assist higher level riggers in activities associated with substation construction and maintenance. Incumbents are expected to develop intermediate skills and the ability to work with greater independence.

Responsibilities

    • Clearly understand the importance of company safe work practices and safety rules.
    • Basic understanding of the Human Performance Tools and requirements.
    • Basic understanding of the isolation of substation equipment and grounding practices.
    • Understands limitations, never assumes, and will STOP to seek help.
    • Operate a heavy-duty truck, tractor-trailer combination, oil tankers, or similar automotive equipment used to transport heavy equipment, such as substation transformers, structural steel, circuit breakers, regulators, large poles, and other associated equipment or devices, assist in the loading and unloading of such equipment.
    • Drive heavy duty tractor to move portable substations from one location to another and assist in setting such substation in indicated location.
    • Basic understanding on how to operate cranes, etc. in close proximity to energized lines and substations to place associated equipment in support of emergency response/repair/construction activities.
    • Basic understanding for crane lifting plans for all sizes/types of material/equipment lifts.
    • Operate different types and sizes of forklifts and cranes used for the loading, unloading, and movement of equipment and materials to meet job site requirements.
    • Familiarize self with the height, width (overhang), length and weight of the load to be transported and select routes in accordance with traffic condition, taking particular cognizance of overhead obstruction and bridges.
    • Responsible to complete and submit all required permitting DOT documents, when transporting large/heavy material/equipment.
    • Furnish/maintain record of transformer and equipment transported and other records memoranda, as required.
    • Basic understanding of pneumatics and hydraulics systems.
    • Maintain work equipment and areas in a clean and orderly condition.

    • High School/GED degree

    • Software skills including word process, email, spreadsheets, etc.
    • Must have a permanent residence approximately sixty minutes from their base location

Working Conditions

    • Frequently and repetitively bend/stoop/squat/lift/climb.
    • Drive for extended periods of time.
    • Demonstrated availability for after-hour work and weekend work.
    • Available for overnight travel.
    • Ability to lift and carry 75 lbs.
    • Ability to work in a diverse environment with individuals from various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds
    • Must be capable of working on elevated work surfaces
    • This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading.
    • This position is based out on North and South Carolina
    • Field Mobility Classification - Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.

Specific Requirements

    • Must have a valid State Driver's License and the ability to obtain a CDL Class A Driver's License.
    • Must pass appropriate level of Duke aptitude test.
    • Ability to pass any required background check for Hazmat endorsement.
    • Ability to pass any required background check for NERC/CIP/Nuclear compliance.
Demonstrated ability to pass panel review by meeting or exceeding requirements for step progression.
