Payroll & Benefits Accounting - Duties
Payroll and Benefits Accounting personnel are responsible for preparing, documenting, and processing payroll, payroll taxes, and employee benefit payments. This role ensures accuracy, compliance, and proper financial reporting related to payroll and benefits activities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Prepare and disburse payroll checks, payroll taxes, and benefit payments
- Ensure accurate setup and maintenance of employee deductions, garnishments, and union dues
- Support fiscal year-end and calendar year-end close activities
- Analyze payroll and benefits data to ensure accurate reporting of W-2s and 1099s
- Reconcile payroll and benefits accounts on a monthly and quarterly basis
- Monitor and ensure proper documentation of employee benefit payments
- Prepare reports related to payroll expenditures, including tax payments and benefit plan disbursements
- Manage insurance policy applications and payments
- Coordinate with the IRS and Department of Revenue to ensure proper tax registration and timely payments
- Forecast and budget payroll and benefit expenses
- Support payroll and benefits reporting requirements for Department of Energy and National Nuclear Security Administration contract deliverables
- Support internal and external audit requests
- Assist with annual benefits open enrollment
- Identify, analyze, and implement controls to prevent wage errors and improper overpayments
- Administer employee benefit eligibility and provide guidance to active and inactive employees regarding benefit plans and options
- Evaluate current systems and recommend process improvements to enhance efficiency
- Perform other duties as assigned
Work Schedule
- Standard 40-hour work week
- Available schedules may include:
- 5/8s (8 hours/day, 5 days/week)
- 4/10s (10 hours/day, 4 days/week)
- 9/80s (alternating 9-hour and 8-hour days)
- Each workday includes a 30-minute lunch
- Overtime may be required at times to meet deliverables, at management discretion
Required Qualifications: Education & Experience
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field plus at least 2 years of relevant experience, OR
- Master's degree in a relevant field
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
Experience & Skills:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience with working knowledge in Payroll and Benefits Accounting

- Security Clearance: Active DOE clearance not required
