The Paralegal will support various routine, high-volume legal matters that may include contracts, litigation oversight and discovery, real estate transactions, government compliance filings, legal research, and other time-intensive tasks.
The Office of General Counsel at Johns Hopkins University is seeking aParalegal. The Office of General Counsel has an immediate opening for paralegal with relevant experience in reviewing contracts, maintaining corporate governance documents, providing litigation support, and conducting legal research. The paralegal is expected to work with the attorneys in the office and university clients on a broad range of matters impacting the university and its academic medical center, including, but not limited to, drafting and reviewing a variety of contracts related to healthcare law, compliance, employment law, experience in responding to discovery requests, including subpoenas, and real estate transactions. Based on need and interest, the paralegal will support the various practice groups in the office, including Litigation & Contested Matters; Business Transactions & Commercial Matters; Healthcare & Research; Compliance, and Student Affairs & Employment Matters.
On call or non-standard work hour requirements
- Position may require work outside of normal business hours in connection with court and other external deadlines.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide basic legal research on matters related to healthcare, research, higher education, and/or other related areas.
- Draft memoranda, prepare chronologies and other analyses, and draft basic correspondence, releases and other documents as needed and directed by counsel.
- Assist with transition of matters to litigation attorneys and other paralegals.
- Assist with the review and drafting of various agreements and forms involving basic and complex business transactions of the University.
- Maintain a database of all contracts.
- Assist with the maintenance of a form's library.
- Gather information and assist with responses to subpoenas, administrative charges, and other litigation matters; collect and manage case documents and exhibits to pleadings, assist the attorneys in the office with preparation of and responses to discovery requests; and draft routine correspondence.
- Support clients through legal contracting processes, negotiations, and document management.
- Assist with engagement letters and conflict of interest waiver agreements.
- Assist with sending bankruptcy and class actions notices to departments and in determining actionable claims for the University.
- Assist with monitoring the University's Hotline for incoming complaints and forwarding complaints to appropriate departmental contacts.
- Highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion and tact.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Paralegal Studies, Business Administration or related field or Certificate in Paralegal Studies from an accredited institution.
- Five years of paralegal experience of progressively increasing responsibility.
- Experience with civil procedure, particularly in Maryland state courts and federal courts. Expertise in drafting, reviewing, and proofreading contracts and other legal documents. Experience with budgets, including tracking and monitoring expense as well as budget reconciliation. Familiarity with operations of a legal office and terminology of the legal industry.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
