Salary Range:$131,250 to $173,000
Final determination of a successful candidate's starting pay will vary based on a number of factors, including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, education and experience. ABOUT THE ROLE
The SCADA & EPMS Technical SME is responsible for leading the successful integration, commissioning, and turnover of SCADA, EPMS, and controls systems across utility-scale Solar and Battery Energy Storage projects. This role requires deep technical expertise, strong communication skills, and the ability to work with developers/owners on complex systems and deliver projects on time. The SME will serve as the technical authority for all controls, communications, and monitoring systems from design validation through commissioning and final turnover.
- Review and comment on Client specifications regarding the SCADA system
- Ensure the 3rd Party SCADA providers deliver to the contractual requirements
- Manages 3rd Party SCADA system providers
- Participates in development and implementation of functional requirements, specifications, purchase, and commissioning of highly complex SCADA systems for monitoring and control of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) and Battery Energy Storage (BESS) facilities
- SME of the various Utility and ISO requirements for PV and BESS across the US
- Manages 3rd Party SCADA providers through the design process ensuring compliance with Client, Utility and ISO requirements
- Perform detail reviews and provide comments regarding the SCADE Engineer of Record (EOR) drawings.
- Ensure timely and satisfactory installation of SCADA Equipment
- Develops and manages all issue recovery aspects for SCADA, control systems and associated equipment
- Reviews plans and specifications for new facilities and ensures proper design and installation criteria are met
- Supervises the design, implementation, and support of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), Human Machine Interface (HMI), and SCADA software for control systems
- Researches and evaluates existing and new operational methods, software, techniques, equipment, and recommends their application to existing systems
- Partners with the Project Management teams regarding the planning and completion of the SCADA scope items
- Interfaces with engineering and PM teams to assist in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities
- Ensure Safeguards to SCADA infrastructure against cyber and physical security risks
- Manages contractor work validation and completion, and development of documentation for SCADA team
- Available for 24/7 emergency response and handson technical troubleshooting and repair during emergencies
- Implements SCADA System Asset Management practices for optimal life-cycle management
- Partners with Engineering and Operations Department groups to recommend enhancement and improvement of existing service, programs, or projects
- Oversee the management and continuous improvement of SCADA platforms, including development, integration, and operational support.
- Serve as a technical and commercial leader, providing strategic direction and expertise in SCADA systems for critical infrastructure.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the reliability and security of operational technology systems.
- Drive the development and integration of new SCADA solutions to enhance business capabilities and meet evolving operational needs.
- Manage the day-to-day support of SCADA operations, ensuring minimal downtime and effective problem resolution.
- Lead SCADA and EPMS integration from design review through commissioning, ensuring full functionality of monitoring, control, and protection systems.
- Oversee and execute FATs, SATs, point-to-point testing, controls validation, network configuration, and system performance tuning.
- Troubleshoot complex communications issues involving PLCs, RTUs, inverters, PCS, relays, metering, and site networks.
- Validate EMS/BMS logic, AGC, VAR control, ramp rate functions, power factor control, and other renewable/BESS operational modes.
- Coordinate across EPC engineering, field commissioning teams, OEM technicians, SCADA integrators, utilities, and owners to resolve issues quickly.
- Develop commissioning plans, test scripts, functional narratives, network diagrams, and as-built documentation.
- Provide clear, simplified explanations and recommendations to owners lacking technical sophistication, ensuring alignment on requirements and solutions.
- Ensure SCADA/EPMS systems meet all cybersecurity, utility interconnection, NERC, and project-specific compliance requirements.
- Support schedule development, risk mitigation, and troubleshooting workflows to maintain on-time project delivery.
- Mentor junior commissioning techs, elevate in-house SCADA/EPMS knowledge, and assist with standardizing best practices across all projects.
ABOUT YOU
SCADA / EPMS SME - Required Skills & Capabilities
- Deep technical expertise in SCADA, EPMS, and related OT systems, including architecture design, data modeling, network topology, and device-level integration.
- Hands-on experience commissioning utility-scale renewable assets (Solar PV + BESS), including understanding of PV inverters, PCS, MV gear, trackers, relays, protective schemes, and substations.
- Strong PLC, RTU, and control hardware knowledge, with ability to configure, troubleshoot, and validate logic, I/O, communication paths, and sequence-of-operations.
- Advanced communication protocol proficiency, including IEC-61850, DNP3, Modbus TCP/RTU, ICCP, and VPN/security tunneling.
- Ability to lead end-to-end SCADA/EPMS integration, including point-to-point testing, FAT/SAT execution, network validation, cybersecurity compliance, and alarm/performance tuning.
- Expertise with EMS/BMS/BESS controls, including EMS logic validation, AGC/real-power/VAR control, ramp rate functions, and interaction between plant controller, PCS, and SCADA.
- Strong documentation and quality-plan development skills, able to create detailed commissioning plans, test scripts, functional narratives, and as-built packages required by EPC and owner.
- Ability to coordinate across OEMs, integrators, commissioning techs, and unsophisticated owners, translating complex technical issues into clear, actionable steps.
- Proven troubleshooting capability under time pressure, able to diagnose comms failures, misconfigurations, network routing issues, bad I/O, and sensor/relay faults quickly.
- Familiarity with NERC, cybersecurity, utility interconnection, and regulatory requirements, ensuring compliance for SCADA/EPMS and all grid-connected controls.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skill with all levels of employees and management
CORE QUALIFICATIONS
- Proven experience in SCADA system management, specifically with platforms known for their robust capabilities in process control and data acquisition.
- Extensive experience with SCADA integration development and supporting live SCADA operations.
- Demonstrated team management experience, with a focus on mentoring and developing technical talent.
- Operational experience within the Renewables industry.
- A blend of technical expertise and commercial acumen, with the ability to translate complex technical requirements into business value.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- 7-10+ years of experience in SCADA, EPMS, or industrial controls integration; utility-scale Solar or BESS preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of communication protocols: IEC-61850, DNP3, Modbus TCP/RTU, ICCP, and related networking standards.
- Hands-on experience with PLCs, RTUs, fiber networks, protective relays, and power monitoring/meters in high-voltage environments.
- Demonstrated success commissioning renewable generation, substation automation, or large-scale industrial controls systems.
- Ability to quickly diagnose complex issues across hardware, software, networking, and controls layers.
- Outstanding communication skills with the ability to translate technical details for non-technical owners.
- Familiarity with grid codes, interconnection requirements, cybersecurity frameworks, and utility coordination.
- Ability to travel to project sites nationwide as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in industrial technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation or related field
Experience:
Minimum ten years of increasingly responsible experience in Project and Program Management Minimum seven years of increasingly responsible experience in SCADA, or Operational Technology fields with significant exposure to radio and cellular communications equipment, PLC programming and automation
