To lead, coach, develop and administer all aspects of the Sailing program within ICSA, Ivy League and institutional standards.

A Program at the Leading Edge of Collegiate Sailing
Dartmouth's sailors are known for grit, precision, and unmatched work ethic-qualities that have kept both the Open and Women's teams consistently ranked among the nation's best. Recent regatta results underscore this strength: in fall 2025, Dartmouth delivered toptier showings at highprofile events such as the Urn Trophy (2nd of 15), the Schell Trophy (5th of 18), and the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship (3rd of 18), reinforcing the program's competitive momentum.

A StateoftheArt Sailing Center Designed for Champions
The newest symbol of Dartmouth Sailing's bright future is its transformative new facility on Mascoma Lake-a $13 million project funded entirely through philanthropic giving. Completed in fall 2024, the 'Tim and Barbara Michels Family Boathouse' represents one of the most significant facility upgrades in collegiate sailing.
The complex features a 6,000squarefoot boathouse paired with a 2,800squarefoot boat barn, designed to blend seamlessly into the lakeside landscape while delivering worldclass functionality. Inside, studentathletes benefit from varsity locker rooms, a team room, dedicated coaching spaces, equipmentdrying technology, and modern amenities tailored to highperformance training.
A fully rigged storage system-made possible by a soaring 24foot barn door-means boats can be stored with masts and sails up, saving valuable practice time and boosting daily operational efficiency. This major upgrade replaces the 1950sera boathouse, long outdated and unable to support the program's competitive ambitions.
The new facility also includes a viewing room and expansive deck, giving spectators, alumni, and visiting teams an unmatched vantage point over Mascoma Lake's sweeping mountain views. Beyond the varsity program, the Sailing Center supports Dartmouth's broader mission-serving physicaleducation classes, community boating programs, and youth camps throughout the summer.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp Bachelors plus 3-5 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Progressively demonstrated successful experience in coaching, race program development and team administration with collegiate, national or high performance program or the equivalent.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of technical and strategic aspects of the sport.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituents in a diverse community.
  • Ability to teach, lead, motivate and guide student-athletes.
  • Ability to recruit effectively with no athletic grants-in-aid and highly selective admissions standards.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment. Supervisory and financial management experience necessary.
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse community.

  • Plan, organize and conduct individual and team practices, training and competitions.

Recruiting

  • Work closely with department administrators to coordinate recruitment activity.
  • Communicate frequently and effectively with admissions representatives.
  • Develop and implement an overall recruiting plan, including, but not limited to:
    - identifying qualified student and talented athletes;
    - building and maintaining prospect database;
    - communicating with prospects by phone, mail, e-mail;
    - traveling to evaluate prospects, meet parents and high school coaches, and
    - organizing campus visits.
  • Maintain knowledge of the College's programs and opportunities to effectively inform prospects.
  • Contribute to the recruitment goals of the College.

Description
Administration

  • Know and comply with the rules and regulations of the ICSA and Ivy League, and work to stay abreast of rule changes, applications and interpretations.
  • Actively seek to ensure that staff members, athletes, and athletics representatives are informed of and comply with ICSA and Ivy League rules.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Train, supervise and evaluate assistant coach(es).
  • Assign coaching, recruiting and administrative responsibilities to assistant coach(es) and other staff.
  • Coordinate the search for and hiring of assistant coach(es).
  • Oversee all aspects of the financial management of the Sailing program. Prepare budget recommendations (allocated and Friend's). Plan, monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of all funds within confines of budget.
  • As necessary, work with travel coordinator as appropriate to make arrangements for competition, recruiting and professional travel.
  • Work with the sport administrator/ senior staff to develop an appropriate competition schedule.
  • As necessary, work cooperatively and effectively with numerous support areas and personnel: facilities and operations, business office, sports information, marketing and promotions, athletic trainers, equipment staff, strength and conditioning.

Description
Alumni and Public Relations

  • Represent Dartmouth, the athletic department, and the Sailing program in a positive manner to various internal and external constituencies including students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, fans, community, media, etc.
  • Actively promote Dartmouth and the Sailing program through the media, speaking engagements, camps, clinics, and community involvement.
  • Develop alumni interest in and support for Sailing through "Friends" group, alumni events, regular communication and other means.
  • Effectively encourage financial donations to the program.
