Tax Controversy/IRS practice and procedure professionals advise RSM clients and internal engagement teams on IRS procedural and controversy issues and represent clients before the IRS. Representation includes but is not limited to, IRS account issues including various tax accounts analysis, penalty and interest abatements, missed election private letter ruling requests, IRS examinations, IRS Appeals and alternative dispute resolution techniques.

Understanding the impact of existing tax laws is hard enough, and new legislation, judicial decisions and administrative authority compound the challenges. Professionals in RSM's Washington National Tax (WNT) office advise clients and RSM client engagement teams with respect to complex issues across a wide range of tax specialty practice areas. WNT is seeking a professional to join its Tax Controversy/ Practice and Procedure team.

In this role, you will consult with clients and RSM professionals across the firm with respect to a wide range of tax controversy, tax practice and procedure issues.

Responsibilities

  • Research, address, and consult on technical issues specific to IRS practice and procedural issues including tax, penalty and interest assessments, statutes of limitation for refunds and assessments.

  • Represent clients before the Internal Revenue Service ("IRS").

  • Experience with Bipartisan Budget Act (BBA) partnership examination rules; IRS guidance and examination issues related to cryptocurrency and digital assets; or examination of research and development and other credit issues is preferred.

  • Prepare written communications to the IRS regarding penalty abatement requests.

  • Working on the IRS account issues, corrections and reconciliations.

  • Prepare Private Letter Ruling Requests.

  • Work with other specialty groups on issues that intersect with other technical matters such as corporate taxation, partnerships, international tax, mergers and acquisitions.

  • Participate in firm trainings.

  • Manage multiple projects in fast-paced and collaborative environment.

  • Mentor staff and provide on the job training and supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field from an accredited university

  • One of the following active accreditations obtained:

    • Licensed CPA in state of practice/primary office if eligible to sit for the CPA

    • If not CPA eligible: Licensed attorney or Enrolled Agent

  • Minimum of five years of Tax experience with deep understanding and experience in IRS practice and procedures, and IRS Controversy

  • Access to reliable transportation and ability to travel to office regularly and client sites as needed.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, analytical, and interpersonal skillsalong with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with firm personnel and clientsalong with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with firm personnel and clients

  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel

  • Demonstrates experience working collaboratively with others and managing a team to achieve operational or project goals; ability to serve as a Performance Advisor; and strong attention to detail with effective timemanagement, organizational, and teamwork skills

  • Ability to perform essential job functions, including meeting client service and performance goals

  • Demonstrates project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, tasks, and projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and maintaining accuracy without compromising quality of work product

  • Ability to work in high pressure environments and maintain concentration while sitting at a desk and working on a computer for extended periods of time.

  • Knowledge and experience with BBA Partnership Audit Regime

  • Client service mindset, ensuring high-quality support, responsiveness, and collaborative engagement with tax teams, internal teams, and clients.

  • Willingness and ability to work extended non-standard hours during peak periods

At RSM, an employee's pay at any point in their career is intended to reflect their experiences, performance, and skills for their current role. The salary range (or starting rate for interns and associates) for this role represents numerous factors considered in the hiring decisions including, but not limited to, education, skills, work experience, certifications, location, etc. As such, pay for the successful candidate(s) could fall anywhere within the stated range.

Compensation Range: $120,000 - $240,900

Individualsselected for this role will be eligible for a discretionary bonus based on firm and individual performance.
