Position Overview

The Product Owner works in a highly dynamic environment, engaging and coordinating the activities with internal stakeholders, enterprise architects, software developers, quality assurance, customer experience, contractors, and third-party vendors to drive flawless development of critical software products. This role will gather, define, and translate user needs and business requirements into viable software product requirements across the software development lifecycle. As we operate in a regulated Genomics CLIA laboratory, producing clear and concise requirements and documentation is of the utmost importance.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Understand end-to-end sample to answer workflows, including bioinformatics output, variant curation, interpretation, and report workflows, including bioinformatics output, variant curation, interpretation, and report answer workflows, including bioinformatics output, variant curation, interpretation, and reportsign-out across germline and somatic tests.

  • Experience with rules driven workflows, shared biomarker/variant knowledgebases, and multiproduct report generation platforms in a regulated clinical environment.

  • Comfort operating under CLIA/CAP/FDA constraints, with auditability, data localization, and separation of LDT vs regulated product scope built into product decisions.

  • Own intake, prioritization, release discipline and change control for clinical curation, rules, and reporting capabilities.

  • Coordinate multiple parallel workstreams against a single roadmap and dependency view.

  • Regularly sync with medical, lab operations, quality/regulatory, bioinformatics, IT, and customer experience teams to clarify scope, tradeoffs, and release readiness.

  • Surface cross-team conflicts, capacity constraints, and safety/regulatory concerns early, drive decisions, and adjust scope or phasing to protect operational stability.

  • Automation-at-scale thinking, prioritizing workflow optimization features that can increase case throughput while preserving clinical quality.

  • Develop and recommend technical software solutions during the product lifecycle throughout conceptualization, product roadmap development, execution, and launch based on a deep understanding of user needs, jobs-to-be-done, user journeys, and business goals.

  • Support clinical genomics sample-to-answer workflows by gathering business requirements and interpreting user needs.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders and project team to define, prioritize, and complete a feature backlog, roadmap, and software requirements.

  • Translate conceptual user requirements into functional requirements, epics, user stories, and use case stories in a clear manner that is comprehensible to multiple software development scrum teams.

  • Proactively understand the current business processes and conceptualize solutions to create efficiencies around them.

  • Assist with planning, scheduling, and tracking of sprints and deliverables using appropriate tools for multiple software development and implementation projects.

  • Facilitate sprint grooming, sprint planning and software delivery across multiple onshore and offshore scrum teams using Agile methodology.

  • Develop and deliver progress reports, proposals, requirement documentation, user documentation, and presentations to end-users, stakeholders, and leadership.

  • Analyze, manage, and track the status of requirements throughout the product and development lifecycle; enforce and redefine, as necessary.

  • Produce flow diagrams, process and dataflow maps, wireframes, and prototypes with detailed product requirements to facilitate a better understanding of end-user use cases, pain points, and opportunities to guide the software development team.

  • Provide business area expertise to developers and software quality assurance (QA) during the Software Development Life Cycle.

  • Provide insight to the Software Quality Assurance (QA) team to develop verification, integration, and validation test plans and protocols.

  • Provide end-user support in response to service requests, as needed.

  • Ability to work in a team environment.

  • Ability to work on a computer and phone simultaneously.

  • Ability to travel 10% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Bioinformatics, or related field as outlined in the essential duties; or Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Bioinformatics, or related field as outlined in the essential duties and 3 years of experience in lieu of a Master's Degree.2+ years of experience as a Business Analyst, Project Manager, and Project Coordinator.
  • 2+ years of direct work experience as a Product Owner, Product Manager, or Business Analyst in genomics, healthcare, or in a laboratory.
  • 3+ years of experience in Agile/Scrum or equivalent software development lifecycle.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and launch product to successful completion in the lens of excellent user and customer experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Has proven experience in developing complex and sophisticated clinical software and informatics solution to support next generation sequencing workflows.

  • Understands how to apply user research and experience design to optimize human and computer interactions.

  • 5+ years of experience as a Program Manager, Scrum master, or Project Manager.

  • Exhibits effective communication through various forms or written and verbal communication to team members who come from a broad spectrum of disciplines.

  • Technically competent with various software applications, such as Jira, Confluence, Miro, Smartsheet, and Microsoft Office suite.

  • Capable of working on multiple software development products/projects at the same time.

  • Capacity to pivot promptly and efficiently when project adjustments and alterations arise.

Salary Range:

$112,000 - $168,000

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - CA - San Diego on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible.
