Overview

As a PrincipalSoftware Engineer supporting mission-essential national security initiatives, you will design, develop, integrate, and maintain secure, high-performance software solutions that enable critical intelligence, defense, and operational missions. Working alongside engineers, analysts, and mission stakeholders, you will build scalable applications and services that directly support the protection of U.S. national security interests.

This position requires a strong foundation in modern software engineering practices, the ability to work in highly collaborative Agile environments, and a commitment to developing resilient, secure, and reliable solutions for complex operational challenges. Successful candidates are passionate about solving difficult technical problems while delivering capabilities that have real-world mission impact.This position will support a mission-focused customer during the full life-cycle development of a Radio Frequency Processing System.

This role is based in Hanover, Maryland.

Eligible candidates may receive a sign-on bonus of up to $10,000, making this an exceptional opportunity to join a mission-critical team supporting national security initiatives.

What will you do?

  • Analyze user and system requirements to derive software design, functional, and performance requirements.
  • Design and develop new software applications and capabilities based on documented requirements.
  • Modify and enhance existing software to introduce new features and functionality.
  • Debug existing software, identify root causes, and correct software defects.
  • Modify software to support new hardware, operating environments, and performance requirements.
  • Integrate existing software into new or modified systems and operating environments.
  • Develop and implement algorithms to meet or exceed established functional and system performance standards.
  • Design and implement complex algorithms operating within strict timing, system resource, and interface constraints.
  • Develop software solutions by analyzing system performance standards, system flows, data usage, work processes, and technical problem areas.
  • Develop simple and complex queries and interfaces for existing or proposed databases and data repositories.
  • Design, develop, and modify software systems using scientific analysis and mathematical models to evaluate and predict design outcomes.
  • Review and test software components to ensure compliance with system and design requirements.
  • Develop and execute software test procedures and document test results.
  • Resolve software problem reports and support troubleshooting throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Perform quality-control reviews of software products and team deliverables.
  • Write, maintain, and review software and system documentation.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to software development processes, documentation, and engineering standards.
  • Collaborate with Systems Engineers and Hardware Engineers to derive software requirements and understand system limitations, capabilities, interfaces, and performance requirements.
  • Provide technical input into system design, including hardware/software tradeoffs, software reuse, and the use of COTS/GOTS solutions in place of new development where appropriate.
  • Coordinate software system installations and monitor equipment and system functionality to ensure operational specifications are met.
  • Serve as a technical or team lead as appropriate for the software development methodology and project.
  • Oversee one or more software development teams and ensure engineering activities comply with established software development processes and project constraints.

Do you have what it takes?

  • Twenty (20) years of experience as a software developer
  • Experience designing, developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex software applications and systems.
  • Experience translating user and system requirements into software design and performance requirements.
  • Experience with software integration, testing, debugging, and defect resolution.
  • Experience developing or implementing algorithms to meet system performance requirements.
  • Experience working with databases and/or data repositories.
  • Experience developing and maintaining technical and software documentation.
  • Understanding of software development and software design methodologies.
  • Experience collaborating across software, systems, and hardware engineering teams.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within multidisciplinary development teams.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and oversee software development activities when required.

VTG's estimated starting pay range is $200K-$300K annually, which is a general guideline for the geographic location. When extending an offer, VTG also considers work experience, education, skill level, market considerations and may possibly include contractual requirements which may cause an offer to fall outside of this range.
