Job Announcement

Independently performs a variety of constituent services, policy analysis, office support, interagency coordination, as well as special projects support in a small office environment for a member of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. Assists with topical areas such as land use, legislation, communications, schools, public affairs, community associations, office administration, special projects/events and other duties as requested. This is an opportunity to engage, support, and interact with people of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences. This role includes community and relationship building and provides an opportunity to learn about local government, while providing exemplary public service to the community. Duties are performed under general direction.

Illustrative Duties

  • Provides administrative and technical support, including front desk coverage.
  • Manages and responds to public inquiries as assigned
  • Research, organizes and maintains policy, legislative and other materials;
  • Drafts and/or edits written materials, such as correspondence, speaker talking points, speeches, presentations, newsletter content and summaries of reports or policy proposals;
  • Assists in planning various aspects of special projects and essential programs, to include scheduling and coordinating meetings, developing agendas and event communications;
  • Sets up, monitors, records, and otherwise provides required staff assistance for board, community and other meetings, including evening or weekend meetings.
  • Files, copies, and maintains records, including the use of spreadsheet tools.
  • Reports after hours and on weekends, as assigned, for planned special events, community meetings and in emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to collect, compile and analyze qualitative and quantitative data; understand and explain laws, regulations and policies governing existing and proposed program operations;
  • Provide excellent customer service, to include communicating effectively orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, employees, clients, and constituents;
  • Research to understand program objectives in relation to departmental goals and procedures;
  • Organize and prioritize work assignments;
  • Use and understand common database, spreadsheet and word processing applications.
  • Knowledge of techniques and practices of research methodology, data collection, and preliminary analysis; report writing, application and use of basic statistics;
  • Interview techniques sufficient to obtain information related to administrative matters;
  • Database, spreadsheet and word processing applications including basic methods of graphic presentations.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to a bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, public administration, business administration, English, communications, public relations, urban affairs or a related field.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Must possess, or be able to obtain, a Virginia driver's license.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain, a notary public license from the Commonwealth of Virginia.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • The appointee to the position must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check.
  • Due to the scope and responsibilities associated with the position, the appointee must be willing and able to work some evening and weekend hours.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position is primarily sedentary; may require lifting up to 20 pounds. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • The successful candidate must be familiar with local government, the legislative process and possess exceptional written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to multitask, work independently and quickly change priorities.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite applications to include Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with Customer Relationship Management Software.
  • Proficiency with Geographic information system (GIS) and ESRI.
  • Resident of the Franconia District or the southeastern portion of Fairfax County or demonstrated knowledge the communities within these areas.
