Job Summary:

This Human Resources Intern will gain hands-on experience in the full spectrum of human resources. This internship provides exposure to recruiting, onboarding, employee engagement, and HR operations while giving you the opportunity to contribute to real projects that impact the team and the organization. Ideal for students looking to build a strong foundation in HR and develop professional skills in a supportive environment. Responsible for supporting the Company's mission, vision, and values by providing an unparalleled experience of fun and entertainment.

Learning Objectives:



  • Develop strong working relationships with management and HR team members.
  • Gain a foundational understanding of HR functions within an organization.
  • Explore core HR areas, including recruiting, onboarding, training and development, employee relations, and employee engagement.
  • Experience HR projects from planning to execution and learn to analyze outcomes.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Leads by example.
  • Responsible for maintaining a high degree of hospitality, as well as a positive and professional demeanor at all times.
  • Provide day-to-day support to the HR Department, including onboarding, team member engagement, communications, talent acquisition, data management, and total rewards.
  • Participate in project-based HR initiatives, such as improving HR processes, analyzing engagement, or supporting internal training programs.
  • Assist with new hire and rehire orientation, including preparation and processing of onboarding materials and compliance with state and federal employment laws (e.g., I-9 verification and audit log maintenance).
  • Support recruitment efforts by monitoring job openings.
  • Help maintain team member recognition platforms (e.g., WorkTango) and HR communications.
  • Assist with scanning, filing, and organizing HR records, including personnel, benefits, and pre-employment files.
  • Shadow HR team members across different functions to gain broader organizational insight.
  • Document contributions and prepare a final presentation or portfolio highlighting key learnings and projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:



  • Pursuing an Associate or Bachelor's degree in human resources, psychology or related fields or equivalent experience in a similar industry.
  • Strong team mentality with a willingness to assist where needed to contribute to the group's success.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality and perform in a highly professional manner as a member of the human resources team.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • The ability to work independently on assigned projects using good judgement and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to interact with guests, co-workers and vendors in a professional, courteous manner.
  • Must be adaptable, versatile and tactful in dealing with people.
  • Must have strong Microsoft Office experience (Word, Excel, Publisher, and Outlook).
  • The ability to learn quickly and work well under pressure is essential.
  • Must be able to pass Canterbury Park's pre-employment screening which includes a criminal background check and verification of work history.
  • Must be able to attain a Minnesota Racing Commission (MRC) license


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Knowledge and/or experience verifying I-9 documentation.
