The Opportunity with McKinstry

We are currently seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Mechanical Piping & Plumbing Estimator to join our team. This role is critical in supporting our sales, engineering, and operations teams by developing accurate and comprehensive estimates for mechanical construction projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of mechanical systems, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage estimating software and databases effectively.

This role offers the opportunity to work on large-scale, complex projects not only in the pacific northwest but across the entire country. We specialize in a variety of industries including commercial, data centers, life sciences, technology, industrial, and pharmaceutical.

You'll be part of a fast paced, highly skilled team that values precision, collaboration, and technical expertise. Our projects range from $50K to $100M+, and we need someone who can navigate the details, think critically, and contribute to delivering accurate and competitive estimates.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support development of initial budgets and estimates with or without engineering drawings or specifications.

  • Develop project cost estimates based on schematic and/or detailed designs.

  • Perform complete piping & plumbing takeoffs using Autobid Mechanical software.

  • Quantity take-offs from SD through CD level design.

  • Review subcontractor and vendor quotes and compile job-specific clarifications and exclusions.

  • Collaborate with engineering, sales, and business development teams to influence design and identify project risks.

  • Solicit subcontractor and/or supplier quotations or scheduling input as required for the assignments.

  • Participate in discussions and meetings with subcontractors, vendors, architects, and internal stakeholders.

  • Intermediate to advanced understanding of mechanical systems in order to recognize relative costs.

  • Communicate project details clearly across teams and ensure alignment with project goals.

  • Mechanical Process Piping, Clean Rooms, & Data Center project experience is preferred.

What You Need to Succeed at McKinstry:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, construction management, or equivalent work experience preferred.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in estimating.

  • Proficiency in Autobid Sheet Metal estimating software and database management.

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems & MCAA labor tables.

  • Experience with design-build and design-assist projects.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Outlook; Bluebeam experience preferred.

  • Familiarity with Revit, AutoCAD, and Assemble is a plus.

  • Excellent communication, time management, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

The pay range for this position is $75,870 - $128,900 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Base pay information is based on market location. A bonus may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
