Director of Research
Job Summary Please note: This is part-time effort that offers full benefits. Location: Tanzania Director of Research is responsible for leading and managing the administrative and operational functions of sponsored research projects implemented by UCSF's Global Programs Office in Tanzania, an in-country unit of approximately 25 employees andadditional ad hoc short-term consultants that supports multiple research projects and collaborative initiatives with the Tanzania and Zanzibari Ministries of Health and partnering institutions. The position is responsible for supervising all members of the Senior Management Team, which includes the Technical Director, the Health Information Systems Director, and the Director of Finance and Operations, who are jointly responsible for supervising (either directly or indirectly) the remaining staff on the Global Programs team. The Director of Research will oversee day-to-day operations, and short- and long-term strategic planning. For internal operations, they will be responsible for key functional areas, including, finance, compliance with all sponsor and local country policies and laws, human resources, procurement, facilities, IT and data security, and research administration and reporting. For external relations, the Director will serve as UCSF's senior representative in Tanzania for strategic partnerships and planning, including engaging in high-level discussions with funders, goernment agencies, implementing partners, and other key stakeholders needed to advance shared goals and ensure research aligment with national priorities. In this role, the Director will manage a mult-idiscplinary professional staff, and be accountable for operational decisions, resource allocation, and risk mitigation to ensure continuity, quality, and efficiency of in-country operations supporting sponsored activities. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $143,900 - $215,800 (Annual Rate). Department Description The UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences (IGHS) is an Organized Research Unit dedicated to advancing health worldwide through rigorous science, innovative education, and strategic partnerships. IGHS brings together faculty, researchers, and practitioners across UCSF and global institutions to address the world's most urgent health challenges with multidisciplinary, equity-driven solutions. IGHS also houses the International Research Support Office (IRSO), UCSF's central hub for operational and administrative support for global research. IRSO oversees UCSF's Global Programs Offices, which provide in- country infrastructure for research administration, compliance, finance, human resources, and partnership management in multiple countries. Together, IGHS and IRSO enable UCSF teams to design, launch, and sustain high-impact research and capacity-building initiatives across diverse global settings. As a leading center for global health innovation, IGHS fosters collaboration across campuses and continents- supporting programs that span implementation science, infectious diseases, climate and health, health systems strengthening, women's health, and emerging technologies
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- Broad knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols and procedures with a focus on budget, account and fund management and / or personnel management under labor contract(s) and personnel policy
- Broad knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk
- management planning; and / or accounting and payroll
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence / persuade all levels of staff
- Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities
- Proven ability to organize department work functions in an efficient and effective manner
- Broad knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs
- Skills to work collaboratively with other locations
- Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution
- Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual in Tanzania Kiswahili
- Expertise in research processes, including ethics compliance, reporting, study design, protocol
- development, clinical trial management, data collection and curation, and manuscript development.
- Familiarity with grant proposal development
- Strong relationships to key stakeholders and agencies within the Tanzania and Zanzibar government, civil society, and international partners
