Job Summary

The Chief Operating Officer (COO), UCSF Health Network, is a senior leadership role responsible for driving operational excellence across the UCSF Health Network, including the Affiliate Partner Network, Community Hospitals Division, Network Ambulatory Centers and Physician Foundation. Reporting to the President of UCSF Health Network, the COO will oversee day-to-day operations, performance improvement, and the delivery of integrated, high quality care across the UCSF Health Network locations. In addition to optimizing performance at current sites, the COO will play a pivotal role in expanding the UCSF Health Network to improve access to care for patients in the Bay Area.

The UCSF Health Network is a patient care network committed to delivering high quality, convenient care that is deeply integrated with both the communities we serve and the nationally recognized complex care capabilities of UCSF Health's academic medical enterprise. The UCSF Health Network consists of an affiliate partner network, two community hospitals, physician foundation, and multi-specialty outpatient centers. The UCSF Health network is a $1.1 B enterprise with 3000 employees. The Affiliate partner network includes John Muir Health, Marin Health and Washington Health. The UCSF Health Network also owns and operates UCSF Health Stanyan Hospital, UCSF Health Hyde Hospital, and outpatient centers in Berkeley and Burlingame, and numerous physician foundation sites across the Bay Area.

The UCSF Health Network has only recently added community hospitals and major outpatient centers. A primary focus of this position is to drive elite operational efficiency across all Network affiliate partner sites, community hospitals and ambulatory locations. By cultivating teams and cultures committed to performance optimization, the COO will drive exceptional patient and family experiences, strengthen clinician and staff engagement, and deliver strong financial performance. This leader will ensure the effective use of personnel and financial resources to execute the Health Network's annual operating plans and enabling sustainable network growth.
As a core member of the UCSF Health Network leadership team, the COO will align operational priorities with Network goals and collaborate with health system leaders to address complex operational challenges. This position carries significant accountability for operational performance across the Network's hospitals and ambulatory sites, understanding that operational excellence creates the foundation for exceptional patient outcomes and sustainable network growth.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $350,100 - $525,200 (Annual Rate).

The UCSF Health Care Network is a growing part of UCSF Health that brings high-quality, equitable and affordable care to people throughout the Bay Area in partnership with other hospitals, physicians, and community groups. The team is highly collaborative and implements an engaging approach to improve UCSF Health's access, quality, and growth and bring to fruition the many joint ventures and affiliations UCSF Health has established in support of its strategic vision.

UCSF Health revenues have doubled in the past 15 years, and the system has expanded its geographic presence throughout the Bay Area and beyond through development of partnerships and affiliations with high-quality organizations that have a common vision for expanding high-quality healthcare. Implementation of this vision is essential to UCSF Health's future. The UCSF Health Care Network oversees operational and clinical integration across both UCSF Health and affiliated community operations and pursues development of opportunities consistent with the systems objectives. Affiliations include hospitals, physician organizations, a health plan, development company, joint ventures and outpatient centers. Owned operations include hospitals, a medical foundation and other ambulatory sites of care.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in business, health administration or clinical degree and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Extensive executive management experience in a complex health care organization.
  • Expert knowledge of health care delivery models, business and strategic planning, financial management, and organizational development.
  • Highly advanced ability to work collaboratively and effectively with medical center executives, campus leadership, external agencies, and other academic medical centers and healthcare institutions.
  • Expert ability to establish and utilize metrics to drive excellence, support operations and facilitate integration.
  • Expert knowledge of capital and operating budget development and management, financial analysis, and reporting techniques.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Expert negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Highly advanced ability to build and maintain a climate of trust that inspires commitment to achieve organization goals.
