Primary Purpose of Department
The Office of Alumni Engagement's primary purpose is to develop, coordinate, and promote programs for our alumni to keep them connected and involved with UNC Charlotte and one another. The Office of Alumni Engagement serves UNC Charlotte alumni and students to strengthen connections and encourage involvement with the institution. The Office of Alumni Engagement is within the division of University Advancement.
Primary Purpose of Position
Reporting to the Associate Director of Alumni Networks and working in collaboration with alumni team members, students, and alumni volunteers, the Assistant Director of Student and Young Alumni Engagement is responsible for managing engagement strategies for current UNC Charlotte students and recent graduates. The Assistant Director of Student and Young Alumni Engagement will engage in relationship building with undergraduate students from the point of admission to graduation and the first three years post-graduation, fostering a culture of engagement that develops Niners for life. The position will develop a Legacy family engagement program and manage the Legacy Alumni Network.
Summary of Position Responsibilities

  • Working with the Associate Director of Alumni Networks, develop and manage a student engagement strategy that starts with admission and extends through graduation.
  • Lead the Alumni Association's welcoming of newly admitted and incoming students.
  • Coordinate the celebration and recognition of graduates in August, December and May. Programs of responsibility include, but are not limited to, 49 Day Countdown to Commencement, Senior Send-Off and Senior Celebration Week.
  • Manage the Student Alumni Society organization, including the identification and recruitment of members, member onboarding, and providing leadership of SAS-sponsored programs and activities.
  • Manage the Future Alumni Network (FAN) organization, including recruiting, selling and retaining student membership, strategic partnerships focused on building spirit and tradition on campus, creating engagement opportunities for members and management of signature FAN programs, including Back to School Bash, Networking with 9 Niners and Dinner with 9 Niners.
  • Facilitate the Future Alumni Network and Student Alumni Society's participation in signature university events and activities such as Orientation, Gold Rush, Student Convocation, Niner Nation Gives, Niner Nation Week, etc.
  • Lead alumni volunteer recruitment and management efforts for Forever A Niner during the fall and spring commencement seasons.
  • Manage the Official 49er Ring program. Develop and implement a marketing plan to promote the ring program and increase ring sales.
  • Work with University Advancement colleagues to coordinate Student Alumni Society volunteer roles and responsibilities related to Chancellor hosted events, other division events.
  • Work with Annual Giving and Donor Relations teams to increase philanthropy education opportunities for current students, including co-leading the I Heart Charlotte initiative.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Director of Alumni Networks, work closely with Athletics to increase student and young alumni engagement in athletic events.
  • Lead the development and management of budgets for the Student Alumni Society program, Future Alumni Network and all Student Engagement initiatives.
  • Manage the UNC Charlotte Legacy family program. Develop and execute key touch points throughout the student lifecycle. Strengthen engagement opportunities for Legacy families extending beyond their students' enrollment at UNC Charlotte.
  • Work closely with the Alumni Communications Specialist and the University Communications team to market and promote respective programs through all appropriate communications channels for the Alumni Association and the university.
  • Serve as a liaison with key student-focused campus partners for the Office of Alumni Engagement, including but not limited to, Student Involvement, Annual Giving and Transition and Success Initiatives.
  • Create and execute engagement strategy for young alumni, including communications, programs and volunteer opportunities, designed to keep graduating students engaged as new alumni. Evaluate engagement activities and outcomes, and make recommendations for future improvements.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice Chancellor of Alumni Engagement, Director of Alumni Engagement Programming, and/or Associate Director of Alumni Networks.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 2-3 years of experience working with students and/or alumni in a higher education setting.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Volunteer management skills are highly desirable.
  • Experience serving as a student leader in a university setting is a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Capable of managing competing priorities and multiple deadlines, and seeing projects through from beginning to end.
  • The ability to travel and participate in evening and weekend activities.
